The UCI BMX World Championship has not been held on American soil since 2001, when Louisville, Ky., played host. Three-thousand amateur and 300 pro racers are expected to compete in the world championship, which will be held July 26-30, 2017, with practice days on July 24-25.

A bid launched by the city of Rock Hill about three months ago culminated in the awarding of the world championship by the UCI.

“Rock Hill is thrilled to be selected to host the 2017 BMX World Championships, joining a list of great cities like Birmingham, Auckland, and Rotterdam,” said Rock Hill’s City Manager David Vehaun. “Hosting the world championships solidifies Rock Hill’s commitment as a premier cycling destination.”

Margaret Court Arena Redevelopment – Richard Breslin & NH Architecture

The great success of this year’s Wimbledon is over, and it’s now just over six months until the Australian Open. Work is continuing apace on the latest redevelopment phase at Melbourne and Olympic Parks, where Margaret Court Arena is undergoing transformation to create the precinct’s third all-weather arena.

The design team, NH Architecture + Populous, is working for Major Projects Victoria on behalf of the Victorian Government to complete the $366M Melbourne Park Redevelopment (Stage 1). This project to be completed by 2015 includes an innovative retractable roof, seating for 7,500 spectators and concourse connectivity to the adjacent Rod Laver Arena.

Part of the challenge has been to manage the construction to enable Margaret Court Arena to be used during the Australian Open each January during the three year construction period.  Furthermore the construction has had to minimise disruption to the adjacent Rod Laver Arena and the hundreds of events it hosts each year.

The primary function of the redeveloped Margaret Court Arena will be to stage major matches of the Grand Slam tournament, but the multi-purpose venue will also host netball, basketball, major concerts and entertainment events. Its operable roof will be the fastest closing roof in Australia, able to shut completely in less than five minutes enabling Margaret Court to become a functional all-weather boutique venue for a busy all year round schedule.

The bold roof design ensures the venue will create its own identity signalling the beginning of a new chapter in the development of the Melbourne and Olympic Parks precinct. The “copper penny” colour of the metal roof has been deliberately designed to complement the existing architecture, particularly big brother next door, Rod Laver Arena, but also to express Margaret Court Arena’s   own individuality. The colour and shape of the roof reflects some of the traditional elements of Melbourne architecture, particularly the sandstone, zinc and copper of buildings along the Yarra River.

The roof’s innovative pleated profile reduces its structural depth and importantly reduces the visual bulk of the building. The pleated nature of the roof also provides the flexibility to fold down to pedestrian level to provide weather protection, particularly at venue entrances. Large roof overhangs on all sides of the building provide shade to the surrounding concourse and public realm, offering a respite for patrons facing the hot summer sun which is often a part of the Australian Open.

The roof is one of the four key individual design elements that have contributed to the overall architectural form; others are the bowl, concourse and the undercroft. The result is a cohesive architectural form conceived as a “container” where the seating bowl becomes the key architectural expression allowing concourse areas to be developed independently. Large areas of glazing maximise views and expose the internal architecture to passers-by.

The design and construction of Margaret Court Arena has been determined  not only by the demands of its busy working precinct environment,  but also by the physical constraints of having neighbours on all sides which has created  additional  challenges, particularly the phasing of construction.

But the design team, NH Architecture + Populous, believes this has ultimately provided a positive influence, ensuring the team is both focused and exacting in the way it has planned and executed the project.  The court position and seating bowl were already fixed, so a great deal of work was undertaken in planning the building, particularly the re-planning of circulation networks for spectators and back of house staff.

The project sets a new benchmark with its sustainability initiatives. It is aiming to be the first LEED accredited sports venue in Australia, so that it can be compared with other similar global venues for ESD measures. Water consumption has been carefully considered and sustainable strategies adopted to reduce potable water consumption.  Enabling works have provided the infrastructure for rainwater harvesting and treatment facilities which include a 4.5mL storm water retention tank to capture rainwater from the new roof. Preliminary calculations demonstrate an overall reduction of 45% in water use against conventional arena design water efficiency measures.  The Arena’s proximity to alternative public transportation minimizes the need for onsite parking and sets aside more space for natural areas thereby serving to reinforce the precinct’s unique park setting.

When the Margaret Court Arena opens in 2015, it will create an innovative, covered boutique sports arena that will achieve a significant step in the realization of the Melbourne and Olympic Parks precinct masterplan.

England Golf Pleased with New Government Funding to Boost Primary School Sport

The England Golf Partnership (EGP) has welcomed the government’s £150m-a-year boost for primary school sport.

Golf is already a popular sport in schools and it is hoped that the new funding will help to get more children playing the game and encourage even closer links between schools and golf clubs.

The new funding arrangements, part of the Olympic Legacy, include ring-fenced money to go directly to primary schools where head teachers will decide how to spend it and a greater role for Britain’s sporting and voluntary organisations, including National Governing Bodies, to increase the specialist coaching and skills development on offer for primary schools.

“This is very positive news and provides an exciting opportunity for golf, which already has a strong presence in schools,” said Roger Moreland, the EGP’s chief operating officer. The Partnership brings together the amateur governing body, England Golf, and the PGA to grow the game with the support of the Golf Foundation and Sport England.

The most recent School Sport Survey, in October 2010, showed that 44 per cent of schools in England delivered golf; an increase from 14 per cent in 2004

The Golf Foundation is an established force in schools through its HSBC Golf Roots programme, which has led to 39 out of 46 English counties including golf in their School Games in the current academic year. This includes training for young volunteers to help run the events and links to golf clubs where many of the events are held.

The Foundation also works closely with the EGP’s network of County Golf Partnerships to foster links between schools and golf clubs and to encourage youngsters to progress to membership.

Brendon Pyle, the Foundation’s development manager, commented: “We have a very good structure in place with Tri-Golf in primary schools and support for PGA Coaches to work in schools and, through our new Junior Golf Passport, offering children a pathway into learning at the golf club.

“It is also significant to note that funding has now been allocated to Sportivate and Satellite Club projects for young people below the age of 14 down to 11.  Golf Xtreme will form the basis of a new and exciting informal offer to this age group.

“Through HSBC Golf Roots we have been able to show that golf can be easily adapted to schools and help to develop skills for life in young people. It’s not just about playing, it’s about integrity and developing personal and social skills.”

The County Golf Partnerships (CGPs) develop links between schools and golf clubs, which are able to take advantage of a host of initiatives to support junior golf. These include the GolfMark for junior and beginner-friendly clubs, which has now been awarded to over 600 clubs; the National Skills Challenge which makes practice fun; and the Junior Organisers’ Handbook which guides those running junior sections.

The CGPs also work closely with the County Sports Partnerships which will help schools link up with local coaches, clubs and sports governing bodies.

Richard Flint, the England Golf development manager, added: “Golf is very well placed to help primary schools offer the best possible sporting experience to children. This is a time of great opportunity for all.”

England to Host Hockey World League Semi Final, Investec to Title Sponsor

England Hockey and the International Hockey Federation (FIH) have announced that London has been selected to host the women’s Investec Hockey World League Semi Final.

The event, a World Cup qualification tournament, will be staged as part of England Hockey’s ongoing commitment to fulfilling the legacy provided by the London 2012 Olympic Games. It will offer thousands of sports fans the opportunity to see world class hockey live in England again after watching the Great Britain women’s team win Olympic bronze at the Riverbank Arena.

Continuing their support of the women’s team, Investec will be the headline sponsor for the weeklong tournament, which will take place at the University of Westminster’s Quintin Hogg Memorial Sports Ground in Chiswick, London from 22-30 June 2013. The hosting of this event means that the next Investec London Cup will take place in 2014.

England Hockey Chief Executive, Sally Munday, is thrilled with the decision to award the tournament to England: “Following the success of hockey at the Olympic Games last summer we have seen unprecedented interest from people wanting to play and watch our sport. The Investec World League Semi Final provides the perfect opportunity for the British public to see many of our Olympians on home turf again after our women’s team captured the love of the nation last summer. As the only British team to win a medal at the London Games we are looking to continue the increase in publicity for women’s sport and our aspiration to inspire a generation.”

On announcing England as hosts, FIH President Leandro Negre said: “I am delighted that the Investec World League Semi Final tournament will be played in England. This is a great start to the London 2012 hockey legacy for the country. I would especially like to thank England Hockey for stepping in at short notice to host such an important FIH event.”

Raymond van Niekerk, of Investec, commented, “It is fantastic to be welcoming world class hockey back to London. Women’s hockey has enjoyed a worthy boost following the success of the GB team at the Olympics and the Investec World League will help to maintain the popularity of hockey this summer. It’s a great honour to extend our support to the event and we look forward to seeing the teams in action this June.”

Hockey was the third largest spectator sport at London 2012 with more than 630,000 people visiting the Riverbank Arena to watch the best teams in the world. Following the Games and a successful Hockey Nation campaign, an extra 30,000 adults picked up a stick during 2012, making hockey the biggest growing team sport last year.

Eight nations will compete at the Investec World League in London. Alongside England, Olympic silver medallists Argentina, Australia and China all gain automatic qualification to the tournament given their top eight ranking. The remaining four women’s teams will be decided following the completion of the World League Round 2 in Brazil in March.

Following the success of the Investec London Cup in 2011 and 2012, England Hockey is continuing its partnership with the University of Westminster to host the Investec World League.

Snooker’s Governing Body Probe Steve Davis’ Win for ‘unusual betting patterns’

Snooker’s governing body World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) have confirmed they are investigating “unusual betting patterns” involving Steve Davis’ win over Thepchaiya Un Nooh in a Players Tour Championship match on Saturday.

Davis crushed the Thai player 4-0 in their third-round clash in Gloucester, but considerable pre-match betting action in Asia have aroused suspicion.

The WPBSA are concerned that Thepchaiya’s price drifted from odds-on to odds-against hours before the tie.

A WPBSA statement read: “The WPBSA have become aware of unusual betting patterns on a match that took place during PTC3 on Saturday 8th September 2012 between Thepchaiya Un-Nooh and Steve Davis.

“This matter has been referred to Nigel Mawer, head of the WPBSA’s integrity unit, to make preliminary enquiries to establish what has taken place and to consider if any action is appropriate.”

WPBSA chairman Jason Ferguson added: “The WPBSA take any potential breach of the members betting rules very seriously.

“Any player found guilty of such a breach is likely to be banned for life from snooker. Protecting the integrity of the sport of snooker is of paramount importance.”

It is believed that the WPBSA do not consider six-time world champion Davis to have breached any rules.

Brazil President Signs Off on Allowing Alcohol for 2014 World Cup

Brazil president Dilma Rousseff has signed the document that will temporarily allow alcohol to be drunk at the 2014 World Cup.

World football’s ruling body FIFA had requested a change in the law following an agreement it signed with a major brewery.

The temporary amendment will also be applied to the Confederations Cup, to be held in 2013. It was finally published Wednesday following a long battle with members of parliament and of the Senate, who had approved the text on May 9.

The amendment includes a stipulation that will also be welcomed by students, the elderly and those less well-off.

After FIFA spent many months lobbying Brazil to soften its stance on beer in stadiums, Brazil secured from FIFA guarantees that it could sell a minimum number of match tickets at half-price to students, people aged over 60 and those who normally receive government hand-outs.

FIFA is set to put 300,000 tickets aside for Brazil to sell them on at half their face value.
