MTG Secure Champions League Rights in Scandinavian Territories

Modern Times Group (MTG) has agreed an extension to its agreement as the official broadcast rights holder for the UEFA Champions League across the Scandinavian territories of Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

The Swedish media company, which operates the Viasat-branded platforms and channels in Scandinavia, has agreed a new deal that encompasses the Champions League campaigns from 2012 through to 2015.

UEFA revealed MTG committed to a “significant amount” of live match programming in the bidding process. In line with UEFA’s platform-neutral approach, the rights will also be exploited on the internet via MTG’s websites and mobile platforms in the various territories.

A statement from UEFA said: “In each country the comprehensive match night coverage as well as the high level of Viasat’s production capability, on-site presence and expert insight from Viasat’s panel of football presenters add significant value to the competition coverage for football fans in the region.

“We are very pleased that the Viasat channels will continue to be the home of the UEFA Champions League throughout the 2012-15 rights cycle.”

ITV4 to Broadcast European Darts Championship in UK

British television channel ITV4 is set to broadcast the PartyPoker.net European Darts Championship in the United Kingdom.

The broadcasts are in addition to the channel’s coverage of Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) tournaments, having also previously screened the Grand Slam of Darts and Players Championship Finals.

In Holland, Dutch broadcaster RTL7 will screen the event, while Fox Sports will broadcast coverage in Australia.

PDC chairman Barry Hearn said: “We’re delighted to continue our association with ITV4 for the PartyPoker.net European Championship.

“This tournament has gained in popularity in each of the past three years, with the mix of the world’s top professionals and form qualifiers from Europe and the UK making it a vibrant tournament.”

The tournament, which offers US$320,000 in total prize money, will add to ITV4’s existing sports coverage, which includes Aviva Premiership Rugby, Heineken Cup rugby, Indian Premier League cricket, Tour de France and the Uefa Europa League, and will be played from July 28-31 at the Maritim Hotel in Dusseldorf, Germany.

ARD and ZDF Close to Securing Olympics Rights for 2014 and 2016 Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is close to reaching an agreement for a US$193m deal for the broadcasting rights in Germany for the 2014 Winter and 2016 Summer Olympic Games with public-service broadcasters ARD and ZDF.

ARD and ZDF are understood to have paid US$206m for the rights for the 2010 and 2012 Olympics, which they acquired via the European Broadcasting Union, the consortium of public-service broadcasters.

The two networks have been the traditional broadcasters of the games in Germany. ARD and ZDF have refused to comment on the story.

The IOC’s biggest source of revenue is broadcasting rights deals, which are expected to bring in close to US$4bn for the next two-Games period of 2010-2012.

Record Viewing Figures in Asia for AFC Asian Cup Soccer Tournament

Asian soccer giants Korea and Japan set new domestic TV audience records for this year’s AFC Asian Cup in Qatar.

Audiences in Japan grew from 131 million in the previous edition of the tournament to 209.2 million this year, and 29.5 million to 41 million in Korea.

Japan, China and Korea were the top three viewership markets with Japan capturing 43.2 percent of the total AFC Asian Cup 2011 audience, according to CSM Media Research released by the Asian Football Confederation today.

Audiences in Japan and Korea made up just over half of the 63 million viewers who watched the semifinal between the two Asian rivals, which was won in a penalty shootout by Japan. This was the highest rated match of the entire tournament and in both countries.

In Japan, TV Asahi drew an audience of 24.46 million while KBS2 had just over eight million in Korea.

The tournament in Doha received record ‘live’ television coverage of nearly 3,600 hours which delivered more than 484 million viewers in 80 countries across the Asia-Pacific region, Europe, North America and North Africa.

The event generated a total reach of more than 2.5 billion.

The second most watched AFC Asian Cup 2011 match was the Japan-Australia final with 54.4 million viewers, where Japan won a record fourth Asian Cup with a 1-0 victory over Australia.

This is the first time that television ratings have been available in the Middle East for the AFC Asian Cup.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are the fourth and fifth largest viewership markets respectively for the event, accounting for 5.8 percent and 1.1 percent of the total audience.

Despite China’s early exit and the absence of ASEAN nations from the competition impacted overall ratings, the total viewership in China was 156.6 million – 32 percent of the total audience for the event.

Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam had a combined audience of 24 million.

Pierre Kakhia, president of World Sport Group, the exclusive marketing and media partner of the AFC, said: “The AFC Asian Cup 2011 delivered top class football and the significant television viewership achieved reaffirms its position as the top sporting event in Asia.

“Asian football fans are incredibly passionate about their national teams and we are delighted to have delivered record multiplatform and ‘live’ coverage for the fans as well as our marketing and broadcast partners across the Asia-Pacific region and most of the world.”

The event also enjoyed significant following on internet and social media platforms.

Nearly seven million fans visited the AFC Asian Cup 2011’s official website www.afcasiancup2011.com, while 2.5 million followed the event on its Facebook page.

Universal Sports Acquire Media Rights to FIS Events Until 2016

Universal Sports announced a deal with the International Ski Federation (FIS) for a major media rights package that covers a number of FIS events, cialis including the World Cup, running until the end of the 2015-2016 season.

The deal with FIS distribution partner Infront Sports & Media comprises all alpine skiing, ski jumping, cross country, Nordic combined, snowboard and freestyle World Cup races. The contract gives the US network coverage of nearly 200 events per season from the start of the 2011-12 campaign, commencing this November.

The new agreement includes full live coverage and delayed action and highlights for television including terrestrial, cable, satellite, and broadband platforms. The rights also include radio and internet broadcasts, including mobile rights and video on demand on a free or pay basis. The deal covers the USA, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Infront’s media rights portfolio comprises FIS World Cup events in around 30 countries around the world.

Universal Sports CEO, David Sternberg, said: “The agreement with Infront allows our network to continue bringing multi-platform coverage of the FIS World Cup events to millions of winter sport enthusiasts across the US. We are excited to showcase some of the greatest athletes on the planet competing week in and week out at stunning venues around the world.”

Bruno Marty, Infront’s executive director of winter sports, added: “The prolonged agreement with Universal Sports ensures that the extensive US audience is connected to the FIS World Cup events on a long-term basis. Universal Sports has acquired the rights to transmit an impressive 1,000 events to TV screens across the country over the next five years. In turn this will generate comprehensive exposure for one of the most popular winter sports in the world.”

In a separate agreement with Infront, Universal Sports has also acquired the media rights for the 2013 FIS Alpine and Nordic World Ski Championships. The Alpine Championships take place from February 4-17 2013, in Schladming, Austria, while the Nordic skiing event will be staged from February 20 to March 4 in Val di Fiemme, Italy.

Eurosport Extends Bundesliga Broadcast Deal

Eurosport has extended its Bundesliga broadcast contract with the Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL) to broadcast the competition into the Netherlands.

The extension of the deal gives Eurosport TV and digital rights for all Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 games in the Netherlands from the start of the 2012/13 season to the end of 2014/15. Their coverage will consist of five live matches per week, supported by a weekly highlights programme, dedicated magazine shows, interviews and expert analysis.

Eurosport 2 will, from 2012, broadcast the Bundesliga in 23 countries.

Laurent Eric Le Lay, Eurosport’s chairman and chief executive, said: “We are delighted to again extend our partnership with DFL to bring Bundesliga action to fans in the Netherlands. Eurosport 2 has significantly contributed to increased international reach and ratings for the Bundesliga and this new deal with DFL confirms our strategy for the acquisition of premium rights and enhances the regional offer of the channel.”

The DFL, which sells broadcasting rights under its marketing subsidiary DFL Sports Enterprises (DFL SE), has also completed deals with Setanta Sports Australia for coverage in Oceania and sports rights agency MP & Silva was awarded the rights for Belgium, Vietnam and Japan.

The DFL SE will individually market the rights in the coming months for seven countries in southeast Asia (Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Macao, Myanmar, the Philippines and Taiwan).

DFL SE managing director Jörg Daubitzer said: “The results of the bid invitation underscore our double digit percentage growth. We are increasingly entering agreements directly with broadcasters with whom we aim to build long-term, valuable partnerships. We are therefore confident that we will successfully market the remaining rights in southeast Asia individually.”

UFC’s Ronda Rousey Signs Buffalo David Bitton Endorsement Deal

UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey has signed an endorsement deal with clothing brand Buffalo David Bitton.

Lifestyle brand David Bitton announced Thursday that the “Rowdy” one will be the female face of Buffalo Pro—which will focus on the brand’s “sports-minded consumer.”

Rousey commented: “It’s such an amazing opportunity to be able to represent Buffalo Pro. Not only am I the first female they’ve ever had representing the campaign, but it’s the first time any MMA fighter has done any type of fashion thing at all.

“I feel really honored to be taking the first steps into this industry. I never had the confidence when I was younger to dress well, and avoided any type of fashion and femininity, and I’m enjoying the chance to embrace it at this point in my life.”

The 27-year-old is undefeated in UFC with a 10-0 record and is a Olympic medallist in Judo from the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

Rousey has also continued her acting exploits with a bigger silver-screen presence in 2015 when she appears in Entourage and Fast & Furious 7. She has previously starred in Expendables 3.

HBO Win Rights to Floyd Mayweather Jr Fight

HBO pay per view has agreed a deal to secure the broadcasting rights to Floyd Mayweather Jr’s comeback fight.

The six-time world champion is set to face welterweight title holder Victor Ortiz on September 17 in a contest that is being labelled as one of the fights of the year.

Golden Boy promoter Richard Schaefer said: “Mayweather is the biggest star, and Victor Ortiz is one of the most powerful guys in the sport. He knocks everybody down.”

The contest has been dubbed ‘Star Power’ in reference to Mayweather’s celebrity status and Ortiz’ powerful punching ability.

Schaefer added: “You have a star fighting a guy with great power. You have a guy in Mayweather who attracts star power. You go to a Mayweather fight and it’s a who’s who showing up. It’s ‘Star Power.'”

HBO have history with Mayweather, having broadcast all of his previous fights. The deal reportedly requires the network to use its sister stations to promote the contest. Therefore, in addition to the fight, HBO will be screening 24/7, a reality show which documents the build-up to major bouts, on HBO as well as an associated station.

HBO were reportedly determined to win the rights to this bout after failing to secure the broadcasting rights to Manny Pacquiao’s fight with Shane Mosley later this year, losing out to network rival Showtime.

Schaefer also confirmed his intention to include Mexican legend Erik Morales on the undercard. He said: “That would make it an even bigger event for the fans”.

Phoenix Suns Sign Marketing Deal with MassMutual

The Phoenix Suns announce a new multi-year marketing partnership agreement with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual).

As part of the deal, price the Suns will team up with MassMutual on community initiatives dedicated to educating young adults about the importance of being financially responsible.

“Every child can benefit from an education about the importance of being fiscally responsible,” said Jason Rowley, Phoenix Suns President. “MassMutual has created unique programs designed to accomplish just that, and the Phoenix Suns are proud to be a partner on those initiatives.” 

In February, the Suns and MassMutual will work together to host MassMutual’s FutureSmart Challenge, where more than 2,500 middle school students will learn about the importance of smart money management.

The Suns and MassMutual will also host a LifeBridge Free Life Insurance event to offer free $50,000 term life insurance to income eligible parents in the Phoenix area to benefit their children’s education.  Through LifeBridge, MassMutual has provided more than $670 million in free life insurance coverage to families across the country.

Al Jazeera Buy French Ligue 1 Soccer Rights to Broadcast in France

Canal Plus will share TV rights for Ligue 1 French soccer with Al Jazeera in a deal from 2012 to 2016. Canal Plus has has won four packages, see whilst Al Jazeera will broadcast  two live games a week.

Al Jazeera already had recent involvement with Ligue 1 soccer, story having secured the international rights for the league last months, pills and this week were the surprise bidders for national broadcasts rights in France. The broadcasters acquired one of five lots available for around US$128m per season, giving them the live rights to Friday night and Sunday evening games.

Canal Plus, who have been long term rights holders of the French top flight, won four packages to Ligue 1 from 2012 to 2016, for a total of approximately US$600m per season. The two deals mean that the French league stands to earn around US$728m per season.

It is not yet clear on which channel Al Jazeera will broadcast the games they have purchased. Reports suggest that the broadcaster has been in talks with Orange to take a share in the Orange Sport channels.

It was not all good news for the French league, however, as they failed to sell another four lots covering mobile rights and pay-per-view, as they failed to reach the required price.
