Redknapp Denies ‘Bung’ Claims

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp reacted angrily as he denied taking bungs, a court heard on Tuesday.

Redknapp also said Milan Mandaric ”don’t know what he is f****** talking about” in a 2009 telephone conversation with a News of the World reporter, who had spoken to Portsmouth chairman Mandaric days earlier.

In short extracts read out to a jury at Southwark Crown Court, Redknapp told the paper’s Rob Beasley he had ”the best accountants in England”, claiming the Inland Revenue was fully aware of his dealings in Monaco.

When Beasley described how Mandaric said the money sent to Redknapp’s offshore accounts were investments outside football, the Tottenham manager replied: ”He don’t know what he is f****** talking about. What is he talking about? It is a bonus.”

Explaining that the payments surrounded profit made on the sale of Peter Crouch from Portsmouth to Aston Villa, Redknapp added: ”If it was something dodgy I would have gone over there and brought it back in a briefcase.”

When Beasley asked him whether he had paid any tax in the UK on it, Redknapp replied: ”Haven’t been asked to, Rob” and went on to say: ”There ain’t nothing crooked in it”.

When asked if it was a ‘bung’, Redknapp replied: ”Don’t say bung. It’s nothing to do with a bung. It’s paid by the chairman. How can it be a bung when the chairman of the football club paid me? What’s a bung? It’s a f****** sick word.”

According to the transcript, he told Mandaric: ”I don’t want to have a problem with the tax man. They was aware of it from day one.”

When asked about the bonus clause in his contract, Redknapp said: ”My accountant has got my contract … I’m not going to f****** show you.”

He added: ”The Inland Revenue know all about it. I’ve got nothing to defend, Rob. I ain’t done nothing wrong … I ain’t done nothing wrong, Rob. I got paid a bonus … everyone is aware of it.”

Redknapp subsequently told police ”I don’t fiddle”, the court heard, as John Black QC, prosecuting, read out an interview which took place with a detective four months later in June.

The manager was said to have told a detective: ”I said to him many, many times ‘Milan, I don’t want to end up with a tax bill. I was told I wasn’t liable for income tax on so many occasions. For the sake of that amount of money or any amount of money, I don’t fiddle. I pay my tax since I have been in football my entire life. I pay every penny.”

Redknapp’s account differed from what Mandaric told Mr Beasley on February 26 2009, the Crown claim. Mandaric was said to have told Mr Beasley that the payments to the Monaco account were nothing to do with Portsmouth securing promotion to the Premier League.

Redknapp declared his Monaco account to inspectors less than two weeks before joining Spurs, the prosecution allege.

Fox to Broadcast Nascar Until 2022 after Major Extension

NASCAR and FOX Sports Media Group (FSMG) announced Monday an extensive new eight-year, multiplatform media rights agreement that ensures FSMG’s broadcast of NASCAR through 2022.

Under terms of the new agreement, FSMG significantly increases its digital rights to include “TV Everywhere” live race streaming of its portion of the season for the first time beginning in 2013.

“NASCAR has been in very good hands and has enjoyed tremendous success the last 12 years in large part because of our fantastic partnership with FOX and FOX Sports Media Group,” said NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France. “We are thrilled to be able to extend our relationship in such a significant way for our track partners, race teams, and most importantly, our millions of loyal and passionate fans. This extension with FOX Sports Media Group helps position the sport for future growth as NASCAR continues to be an anchor with one of the world’s largest and most influential media companies.”

As part of the new agreement, which takes effect in 2015, FSMG retains the television rights to 13 consecutive Sprint Cup Series races each year, beginning with the Daytona 500. In addition, FSMG retains the rights to the Sprint All-Star Race, the Daytona Shootout, the Duel at Daytona, the entire Camping World Truck Series season and practice and qualifying for the Sprint Cup and Truck Series races that FSMG broadcasts.

FOX remains the exclusive home of the Daytona 500 through 2022, a title it has proudly held for the past six years and nine of the past 12.

“We’re extremely happy to have worked closely with Brian and his team at NASCAR over the last few months to expand and extend our relationship for what is without question the most popular motorsport in the country,” said Eric Shanks and Randy Freer, FSMG co-presidents and CEOs. “NASCAR has been a staple at FOX for more than a decade, and we consider it one of the signature sports we cover. With our commitment renewed, we look forward to presenting NASCAR thoroughly, professionally and creatively for many years to come.”

On the digital front, FSMG gains “TV Everywhere” rights starting next season to live stream all FSMG races, along with pre- and post-race coverage, race highlights and in-progress race highlights to events it televises. This portion of the deal was made possible by NASCAR’s reacquisition of operational, business and editorial control of its digital platform, a move that takes effect on Jan. 1, 2013.

“NASCAR fans’ demand and desire for NASCAR content stretches across all platforms and distribution channels,” France said. “As we’ve done with this FSMG extension, we will continue to take the appropriate measures to ensure our fans have access to the sport wherever they are and through all available devices. NASCAR is one of the most accessible sports in the world and this new deal builds upon that in a very significant way.”

Monday’s announcement comes less than two months after NASCAR and FOX announced they are teaming to provide the sport’s most expansive Spanish-language broadcast offering ever with FOX Deportes’ coverage of 15 Sprint Cup races starting in 2013. Of the 15 race broadcasts, FOX Deportes, the No. 1 U.S. Latino Sports network, will carry six Sprint Cup Series races live, including, for the first time ever, a Spanish-language broadcast of the Daytona 500 on Feb. 24.
