ABU Acquires Broadcast Rights to 2013 FISU Summer Summer Universiade

ABU, asthma the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union, medstore has secured the broadcasting rights to the 27th Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia – July 6-17, 2013 and the 26th Winter Universiade in Trentino, Italy – December 11th-21st, 2013.

“In a continuous effort to help the ABU members to acquire the most wanted and prestigious events in the world, ABU is very delighted to announce to its members and partners that we have been granted the television rights and non-exclusive internet and mobile rights of the 27th Summer Universiade (Kazan, RUS) and the 26th Winter Universiade (Trentino, ITA) for the majority of ABU Sport Group members”, Dr. Javad Mottaghi, the Secretary General of ABU said. “FISU, the events organizing body and rights owner, except for individual dealing with several Asian countries, has granted the rights collectively for the first time to ABU, with a high sense and trust that ABU, with its strong membership and broadcast service background, will contribute enormously for a successful coverage among its member countries.”

The Universiades, (Winter & Summer) are held every two years, gathering student-athletes aged 17-28 and are second only to the Olympic Games in terms of number of participating athletes and countries represented. In Kazan, more than 10,000 student-athletes from more than 160 countries will compete in 27 sports.

“As a broadcaster, I have all the reasons to believe that the lively and long standing youthful values presented by the Universiade, will be shared by FISU and ABU, along with its members, in a long future relation and cooperation between both parties”, Dr. Mottaghi commented.

“I am extremely pleased that ABU will also bring the FISU flagship event to the homes of our Asian student-athletes, their family and friends”, said FISU President, Claude-Louis Gallien. “Like FISU, which strives for excellence on campus and on the sports field, ABU brings its quality coverage and story-telling to the Asian audiences. Exclusive: Wembley Not Looking for Naming Rights Deal

“If the right sort of people want to come and associate with Wembley, there are obviously various matches, which is good for both brands,” he told iSportconnect exclusively

“We are a global brand and we will continue, as any commercial entity would, to look at sponsors. 

“But, in terms of an absolute naming right, that is not something that we would do.” 

Together with Chairman Melvin Benn, Maslin launched a vision that pictures Wembley hosting the best stadium entertainment in the world, therefore any partner would need to share his ambition. 

He added: “There are four or five key areas where we would say, “does the brand fit with what we are trying to achieve and is it in line with our vision?” 

“We want to develop the best stadium experience in the world, so some brands would be a more logical fit than others.”

European Broadcasting Union Renews Terms for President & Vice President

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) have announced their president and vice-president of have been elected for a further two-year term during yesterday’s opening session of the EBU General Assembly in Strasbourg.

Jean-Paul Philippot from Belgium’s RTBF has been appointed as president for a third term, while Claudio Cappon from Italy’s RAI has been appointed vice-president for a second full consecutive term.

Themis Themistocleous from Cyprus’s CYBC was chosen to fill the vacant post of member of the executive board for the remainder of 2012. He replaces Teresa Pignatelli.

“I am very grateful for the confidence and support of our Members. I look forward to continuing to work with the executive board and the director general to defend and promote the values that reflect our distinctiveness as public service media, and ensure that our audiences have free access to our content on all media platforms,” said Philippot.

BBC Sport to Air EuroHockey Nations Championship

BBC Sport has secured rights to broadcast the EuroHockey Nations Championship.

As part of the deal BBC will air all games on iPlayer, the red button or online from 17th August.

Barbara Slater, Director, BBC Sport: “The BBC has always been a big supporter of Olympic sports and we are building on the success of London 2012 to enhance our coverage of these sports throughout the year.” 

At London 2012, Team GB’s women won a bronze medal, the first women’s Olympic hockey medal in 20 years and only the second in their history. A peak audience of 8 million viewers watched Team GB’s men play the Netherlands in their London 2012 semi-final. Following the success of the national teams, the number of people playing hockey has followed suit, with a growth in participation in 2012. 

Sally Munday, Chief Executive of England Hockey, notes the importance of the BBC’s coverage in continuing the momentum hockey is gathering: “With the international teams on the up and hockey an ever-increasingly exciting sport to watch, mainstream coverage of top-level hockey is instrumental in helping us increase the visibility of the sport.  We hope the British public enjoy the coverage and that people are inspired to get involved in the sport.” 

The EuroHockey Nations Championship will be held in Belgium from August 17 – 25 with both the male and female competitions featuring eight teams. England, Ireland and Scotland will compete in the Women’s Championships, while England and Ireland will compete in the Men’s Championships. 

Birmingham City Owners Have Two Potential Bidders for Club

Birmingham City may soon have new owners after their current Hong Kong-based owners said they’re in talks to sell the club with two possible buyers.

The Midlands-based team was relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2010-11 season, viagra and its largest shareholder Carson Yeung was arrested in Hong Kong last year on money laundering charges.

Parent company Birmingham International Holdings Ltd. (2309) said in a statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange it signed confidential non-disclosure agreements with two parties it declined to identify. Shares in the company have been suspended since June 2011.

Talks are at an early stage, clinic with “interested parties having sought and were furnished with electronic due diligence materials in relation to BCFC,” the statement said. “To the best of the board’s knowledge, information and belief, having made all reasonable enquiries, the prospective buyers and their ultimate beneficial owners are third parties independent of the company and its connected persons.”

Yeung, the former hairdresser who bought control of English soccer club in 2009, in June 2011 was charged with money laundering in a Hong Kong court.

The police brought five charges against the 51-year-old for dealing with property “known or believed to represent proceeds of an indictable offense,” with a total value of HK$721.3 million ($93 million), according to documents read in court. The trial is set for November. Yeung denies the charges.

Soccer authorities imposed a transfer embargo on the team after it failed to submit accounts for 2011.

Chip Bower Appointed CMO of Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors have named Chip Bowers as the team’s Chief Marketing Officer (CMO).

Bowers, hospital who will begin his new duties in mid-July, will oversee all marketing and corporate partnership sales & services efforts for the organization, while reporting to President & Chief Operating Officer Rick Welts. Additionally, his responsibilities will include management of the team’s game operations and various digital media projects. 

“I am extremely honored to be joining the Warriors organization,” said Bowers. “Joe Lacob and Peter Guber have a vision for the Warriors organization that is very compelling and have demonstrated their commitment to building a first-class executive team. Bowers joins the Warriors from the Orlando Magic, where he worked the last four years and served this past season as the team’s senior vice president of corporate partnerships & marketing. With the Magic, Bowers oversaw the marketing, corporate partnerships sales and client services process for the organization, while orchestrating the sale of naming rights and all founding partnerships associated with the Amway Center – the Magic’s new arena that was named 2012 Facility of the Year by the Sports Business Journal. Under his direction, the Magic’s corporate partnership team also won the inaugural Sponsorship Activation Award at the NBA Sponsorship Meetings in 2012. He originally joined the Magic in June of 2008 as vice president of corporate partnerships.

Prior to joining the Magic, Bowers spent eight seasons in various roles within the business development department for the Seattle SuperSonics organization. In May of 2007, Bowers was promoted to vice president of business development, where he oversaw the corporate partnership development, revenue generation and client services for both the Sonics and Seattle Storm of the WNBA. 

A graduate of Appalachian State University, Bowers began his career in professional sports with the San Diego Padres, where, as a senior sales executive, he assisted in fiscally rejuvenating previously unused revenue streams by selling newly developed stadium signage, website advertising and multi-dimensional marketing programs.

France Televisions Secure Broadcast Rights to Major FIBA Events

Europe’s basktball governing body, FIBA have announced France’s public broadcaster France Televisions will broadcast the men’s and women’s 2013 and 2015 EuroBasket Championships as well as the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain and the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women in Turkey.

This agreement guarantees live free-to-air broadcast of all Finals involving the French National Team which adds to the Canal+ Group live broadcasts, who had previously acquired the rights for all games of the above-mentioned championships.

The agreement also gives France Televisions the option of broadcasting all Semi-Finals involving France.

For the current EuroBasket Women 2013 event, if France qualify for the Semi-Finals, the game will be broadcast live on France 4 on Friday 28 June, starting at 20:00 CET as well as live on Sport+.

If the French win and qualify for the Final, the game will be broadcast live on France 3 on Sunday 30 June, from 20:00 CET and also live on Sport+.
