Annecy 2018 bid receives backing of French businesses

The French business world has given its backing to Annecy’s bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games after MEDEF, the country’s main commercial confederation, heard a project overview from bid CEO Edgar Grospiron.

Grospiron addressed an audience of more than 200 business leaders at the end of last week at an event organised by MEDEF.

And the former Olympic champion outlined the bid committee’s plans to see off competition from rival bidders Munich and PyeongChang.

Head of MEDEF, Laurence Parisot, said: “Annecy 2018 is a tremendous project, first of all because it is a region which is no stranger to sporting success but also because it is an inspiration to see men and women who have already reached the heights of Olympic achievement to devote their time and efforts to serving the community.

“This is why the MEDEF and all the companies within the MEDEF are resolute in their support.”

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will decide the host city for the 2018 Winter Games in Durban next July.

Sunderland Partners with StreamAMG to Offer Fans New Free Multimedia Service

Premier League club Sunderland AFC has agreed a partnership with StreamAMG, capsule the pan-European group which includes StreamUK, case for the launch of the club’s new online multimedia service, viagra 40mg SAFSee.

This is the fourth Premiership club’s video to be powered by the StreamAMG platform.  The new SAFSee offering opens up a whole host of content to Sunderland fans completely free of charge.

Supporters anywhere in the world can listen to online audio commentary of every game as well as watching extended match highlights, interviews, features, Academy coverage and much more – all without paying a penny.

Fans need only their email address and limited personal details to sign up for SAFSee, which replaces SAFC TV – a subscription-based service.

Stream UK worked alongside the club’s digital media team and specialists from Aqueduct, Sunderland AFC’s lead digital agency, to integrate the required elements into the site and content management system.

The product launched ahead of the 2013-14 campaign and is proving successful, with thousands of fans across the globe already having signed up.

Sunderland AFC’s commercial director, Gary Hutchinson, commented: “Stream UK has been excellent during the integration process and have delivered a robust and flexible platform.

“We were keen to make video and audio free to air to all fans, regardless of where they are in the world, and consider this a key part of our overarching strategy going forward.”

StreamAMG founder, Duncan Burbidge, added: “We’re really excited to work with Sunderland. It’s opportunities like these that drive our platform forward.”

Greg LeMond to Challenge Pat McQuaid for UCI Presidency

Tour de France winner Greg LeMond has revealed his intention to run for the UCI presidency opposite Pat McQuaid following the recent trials and tribulations the organisation has faced.

“It is now or never to act,” LeMond said in an interview with the Le Monde newspaper. “After the earthquake caused by the Amstrong case, another chance will not arise.”

LeMond, 51, is now the only American to have won the Tour de France after USADA disqualified Armstrong for life and cancelled his seven Tour victories. He has been outspoken on anti-doping matters and was a key witness in the Floyd Landis case.

“I’m ready. I was asked and I accepted,” LeMond said. “If we want to restore public confidence and sponsors, we must act quickly and decisively. Otherwise, cycling will die.  Riders do not understand that if we continue like this, there will soon be no money in cycling.”

McQuaid has been president of the international cycling federation since 2005, serving to date four two-year terms. The next election is to be held in March 2013.

While questioning whether he was really “the best candidate,” LeMond said that “I am willing to invest to make this institution more democratic, transparent and look for the best candidate in the longer term. I think someone like Dick Pound [former president of the World Anti-Doping Agency], is perfect in terms of ethics, who has real experience in the fight against doping and corruption.

LeMond suggested in fact that McQuaid should resign.

“If Pat McQuaid really loves cycling, as he claims, he would have resigned. He could say, ‘Okay, I made mistakes, but now I quit to find a new leader for the UCI,'” LeMond said.

LeMond said that he hopes Armstrong will one day confess to what he did during his career.

“I hope so. One day or the other. When he feels completely isolated and doesn’t have any money, he may tell the truth. Armstrong has done much harm to cycling.”

Eurosport Case Study: “Don’t Blink – Eurosport & the London 2012 Olympic Games”.

When the seven young British athletes lit the Olympic Flame at the Opening Ceremony of the London  2012 Olympic Games they started one of the most eagerly awaited sporting events in history.

The 10,000 athletes had prepared for years for just two weeks of competition and the world waited for the stories to unfold.

But it was not just athletes whose preparation would be tested. Since the Games were awarded to London in July 2005 every organisation with a stake in the Games had also been preparing.

Olympic Experts

For broadcasters at the Olympic Park, it was business as usual. Another live sporting event, with a global audience, eager to see athletes perform on the biggest stage.

And for Eurosport London 2012 was familiar territory, having broadcast in full the 11 previous Summer and Winter Olympic Games since Albertville in 1992.

London was different though as the first truly “digital Games” where technology would play a key part in ensuring the fans could enjoy the whole event, wherever they were and on whichever device they owned.{vimeo}52240397{/vimeo}

London 2012 for Eurosport created a great opportunity. Here was an Olympic Games where Eurosport’s pan-European reach of 130m homes across the continent could be fully exploited.

A team of 600 Eurosport staff worked on the event across Europe, of which 100 were on site. This included our expert analysts, Olympic 100m champion Maurice Greene and 100m Olympic swimming champion Pieter van den Hoogenband, who also featured in the channel’s Olympic promo, and reported live and joined Eurosport’s nightly live magazine programme Together to London from the channel’s bespoke studio in the International Broadcast Centre.

The production staff, directors, producers and journalists brought their experience at Eurosport of covering over 120 different sports and over 5,000 hours of live action every year.

This delivered Eurosport’s editorial approach to make the sport the star.  It followed the best live action wherever it took place during the day, coupled with the freedom from national allegiances to the viewer the best possible experience.MM_590x300_swim

Premier League Chairman Supports Qatar 2022 Winter World Cup

The prospect of the 2022 World Cup being played in the winter has been boosted by support from Premier League chairman Sir Dave Richards and Britain’s FIFA vice-president.

Richards, speaking at the Securing Sport conference in Qatar, said: ”I think they will play (the World Cup) at a time that is proper for football but they will have to speak to the leagues in Europe.

”They will have to agree proper times when we can start and finish.

”At the moment it has a tremendous amount of implications for Europe. For us, at this minute, the answer is ‘no’.

”But, if we take a proper view, we have to find a way to have a winter spell where we don’t play and I think common sense will prevail.

”We’ve got FIFA now saying that medical people are saying that they can’t play in Qatar in the summer because of the heat, which is probably right.

”I think over the next few years, things will change and they will come to a compromise.”

Jim Boyce, from Northern Ireland, believes the searing heat of July in Qatar, where temperatures often reach more than 45 degrees Celsius, will be too much for players and spectators even with the promise of air-conditioned stadiums.

Boyce told Press Association Sport: “I was not part of the process that gave the World Cup to Qatar, but my feeling is that common sense should prevail. The World Cup is the greatest event in football and from a spectator point of view it has to be played at a time of year when people can enjoy it in comfort.”

He added: “People I know who live in Qatar say it would be very uncomfortable for the fans.

“There is also a medical and health concern for both players and spectators and if it is going to be safer to play it in January instead of July then I would be in favour of that.”

FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke said earlier this month that the 2022 World Cup could be moved to the winter if research shows holding the tournament in the summer heat would be dangerous for players, while Michel D’Hooghe, the chairman of FIFA’s medical committee, has also backed the move to play it in the winter.
