FA Chairman Blasts Ideas to Change 2022 World Cup to Winter

FA Chairman David Bernstein has criticised suggestions to change the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to the winter.

The tournament is currently scheduled to take place in the height of the Qatari summer when temperatures can reach 50 degrees.

The hosts say the stadiums will be air-conditioned, health but FIFA president Sepp Blatter and UEFA counterpart Michel Platini have both suggested the tournament be moved back to winter for the benefit of players and spectators alike.

UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino told the Times he would prefer to see Qatar move the tournament back.

But Bernstein belives this would be incredibly unfair on the other countries who put in bids to host the 2022 tournament.

“My personal view is that it would be a case of a false prospectus if the 2022 World Cup in Qatar was switched to the winter, patient ” Bernstein said.

“It is a serious matter, bidding for the World Cup, and countries including ourselves spent huge amounts of money bidding for the tournament.

“The bid was for the World Cup to be played in June and July and for it then to be moved to the winter would be fundamentally flawed. If people want it in the winter, they should bid for it on that basis.”

Kate McLoughlin Becomes chef de mission for Australian Paralympic Team at Sochi 2014

Kate McLoughlin has become the first female Australian to be the chef de mission for the Australian Paralympic team at next year’s 2014 Sochi Games in Russia.

There have been female deputy chef de missions before – Kitty Chiller for the Australian Olympic team in London last August, and Kate McLoughlin for the Paralympic team a month later in September.

But McLoughlin has broken through the glass ceiling with her appointment as chef for the Australian Paralympic team at next year’s Sochi Games in Russia.

“I don’t think it’s a case of women not being interested in sports operations,” McLoughlin said of the groundbreaking appointment, which was foreshadowed online by The Australian yesterday.

“I feel it’s a case of most women being ranked at middle management or lower. It’s men therefore that always get the leadership roles.

“I read somewhere recently that only 20 per cent of national federations have women as CEOs. I guess everything in sport still tends to lean towards men but it’s changing,” she added.

“And that’s what is really good, the APC is trying to break that trend and bring women through.”

The news coincides with the ‘one year to go’ countdown to the 2014 Paralympics which will run from March 7-16.

McLoughlin, who is sports operations manager at the APC, was village mayor at the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Games and also worked for the NSW Institute of Sport.

Sky Sports Extends Broadcast Deals with Six Different Sports

Sky Sports have announced today new long-term contracts with six current sports properties.

The six different sports includes the British & Irish Lions, Super League rugby, England overseas cricket, Scottish football, speedway and sports entertainment leader, WWE.

The deals further strengthen the unrivalled breadth and quality of coverage on Sky Sports and come on the back of strong growth in audiences.

In the last six months of 2013, Sky Sports enjoyed its highest share of viewing for six years, including increased audiences for live Premier League football and its biggest-ever audience for rugby union.

For Lions Rugby Sky Sports will provide live coverage of the 2017 British & Irish Lions Tour to New Zealand, including every Test match against the All Blacks. With Super League they have signed a five-year deal from 2017 to air Leage matches until at least 2021.

The deal with England cricket encompasses the New Zealand tour including two England winter tours in 2018 and 2020. Scottish Football will again be seen on Sky Sports with a new four-year deal inked with the Scottish FA beginning next season for the Scottish Cup, international friendlies and Scottish FA Youth Cup.

There were also deals for Speedway with the Elite League being showcased and WWE with a new ive-year deal from 2015 offering over 600 hours of content a year from the worldwide leader in sports entertainment including weekly programming and 12 special PPV events a year.

The new agreements add to an outstanding line-up of live sport on Sky Sports, with highlights in 2014 to include every match in the ICC World Twenty20, the launch of live coverage of Euro 2016 qualifiers and the Ryder Cup from Gleneagles.

Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports, said: “Sky Sports had an excellent year in 2013 and we’re looking forward to an outstanding line-up for our customers in 2014.

“These agreements secure even more fantastic live sport for our audience, offering them unrivalled breadth and quality for years to come.”

Milan Mandaric Reveals No Offers Yet for Sheffield Wednesday Takeover

Sheffield Wednesday owner Milan Mandaric has confirmed there have been “no tangible” takeover offers yet for the English League One team.

Mandaric, speaking in response to mounting speculation over interest from a Chinese-American consortium, told the club’s official website: “Of course, there are some people who are interested, but I haven’t seen anything tangible or anything that I can report to our supporters.

“As I always say, I’m here to serve them and any decision I make for this club is a decision for the benefit of our supporters and our club.

“It will be no different if the time comes. If somebody comes here and wants to do a better job and quicker, accelerate the progress, I’d welcome that and that’s what I promised our supporters and I’ll keep that promise.

“I always like to bring them up to date and that’s very simple, we’ve got nothing tangible on the table that I can report to them.”

The former Portsmouth owner bought the club for £1 in 2010 after paying an initial £7million to help clear more than £23million of debt, said he would gladly hand over his control to the right bidder.

Issa Hayatou Re-elected Confederation of African Football President

Issa Hayatou will serve another four-year term as Confederation of African Football (CAF) president after being re-elected unopposed.

The 66-year-old, who was voted into power in 1988, has already said this seventh term will be his final period as head of the organisation.

Hayatou, who was applauded by delegates at the CAF congress in Marrakech, also received a special certificate from FIFA to commemorate his silver jubilee on the executive committee.

Ivorian Jacques Anouma wanted to oppose Hayatou at the elections, but a rule change prevented him from doing so. His attempt to overturn the decision to disqualify non-executive members from the election was rejected by the Court of Arbitration For Sport (CAS).

Hayatou used his re-election to make reference to Anouma’s challenge.

“The presidents of the federations approved an amendment preventing a few of them from participating in the race for the CAF presidency, which now permits only those who have held positions of responsibility within the institution to run for presidency,” Hayatou told delegates.

“The conduct of the Executive Committee along with the members of national associations during this case was exemplary. The principle of sovereignty of the General Assembly was recognised by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.”

He is the fifth CAF president and the longest serving.

Munich 2018 Makes Five New ‘Friends’ in Bid Support

Munich, rival bidders to the PyeongChang and Annecy efforts to win the right to host the 2018 Winter Games, have received a timely boost to their bid prospects after announcing an agreement welcoming on board five new ‘Friends of the Bid’.

The new deals mean that the Bid Committee has now signed a combined total of 21 partnership agreements. The five new ‘Freinds’ include aeronautics giant EADS, City Partner München, Eventpool, JMT Mietmöbel and United Ambient Media.

Managing director of Munich 2018, Jürgen Bühl stated: “The commitment by these five new ‘Friends of the Bid’ demonstrates that local, national and international businesses can see the wealth of opportunities that hosting the Winter Games would generate: not only for their own businesses, but for their entire industries. In addition to financial support, these businesses are pledging to contribute their expertise, ideas and products to Munich 2018’s bid.”

Ottawa Senators Ink 12-Year Bell Media Partnership

National Hockey League franchise Ottawa Senators have announced a major partnership with Bell Media that will include a new 12-year regional broadcast rights and corporate sponsorship agreement.

The deal will make TSN and RDS the official broadcasters of the Ottawa Senators through the 2025-2026 season.

“We recognized early on that our regional broadcast rights coming up for renewal was a very important asset,” said Senators owner Eugene Melnyk. “This new 12-year agreement with Bell Media represents one of the most wide-ranging and comprehensive deals in NHL history. A long-term deal was personally important as it will allow us to work very closely with the Bell family to continually integrate emerging and evolving technologies so our fans receive a superior product for our regional television and radio broadcasts. This agreement is significant for the Senators, our fans, and the future of our franchise.”

“This comprehensive partnership marks an exciting new chapter for the Ottawa Senators and all of their fans, as well as TSN, RDS, and Bell,” said Kevin Crull, President of Bell Media. “Leveraging the strength of the world-class hockey production at TSN and RDS, as well as Bell’s extensive assets and reach, we are eager to amplify Ottawa Senators regional coverage to a whole new level.”

Beginning next season, the agreement will see TSN and RDS each broadcast its slate of regular season and pre-season games in the Ottawa Senators’ designated broadcast region, which spans Eastern and Northern Ontario,Quebec, Atlantic Canada, and Newfoundland.

The new agreement also grants full radio broadcast rights to TSN Radio 1200 in Ottawa, continuing to make it the official English radio voice of the Ottawa Senators over the next 12 years. Details on the French-language radio broadcasts will be announced in the coming weeks.

Additionally, the Senators and Bell are strengthening their exclusive corporate telecommunications sponsorship over the long-term. It includes a broad variety of activations on all levels, including community engagement, in-arena promotions and branding, and retail support through The Source.

Bell, an original partner of the Ottawa Senators, has a relationship with the team that dates back 22 seasons to when the team returned to the NHL – marking Bell’s longest relationship with an NHL franchise.

John Kelly Promoted to Chief Operating Officer of Football Federation Australia

John Kelly has been announced as the new Chief Operating Officer of Football Federation Australia (FFA).

Kelly has been promoted to the new role after joining FFA as the Chief Financial Officer in January 2012. Previously, he spent a decade in senior executive roles with Ten Network Holdings.

During FFA’s broadcast negotiations last year with FOX SPORTS, SBS and Foxtel, Kelly played a leading role in securing arrangements that will deliver $160 million of economic value of the next four years.

FFA CEO David Gallop said the creation of the COO role and the appointment of John Kelly were the first steps in a restructure aimed at giving FFA a greater focus on implementation of strategies and operational efficiency.

“John Kelly has vast experience in corporate finance and executive administration within the sports and entertainment industry,” Gallop said.

“His significant role in the successful broadcast negotiations was acknowledged by all parties. In my first 100 days in the job John’s sharp business and financial acumen have been demonstrated on a wide range of major projects beyond his finance portfolio.

“I’m delighted John has accepted this important role as COO and I look forward to working closely with him to make FFA a better organisation for all our stakeholders.”

As the COO, Kelly will retain responsibility for finance and assume control of international and domestic broadcast and digital rights, information and communications technology, major event acquisition and stadium hiring arrangements.

He will have a formal co-ordination role over major projects that cover a range of new business opportunities for the benefit of community football and the professional tier.

“I’m grateful to David Gallop for giving me this new opportunity and having confidence in my ability,” Kelly said.

“My first year at FFA has given me a great insight to the football world. I’m tremendously excited by the growth I’ve seen this season and the opportunities ahead. As COO, I look forward to the challenge of delivering business improvements across a wide range of activities.”
