More Olympic bids with South Africa and Dubai joining

Dubai has announced it will concentrate its efforts on the 2024 Games, while South Africa has again emerged as a serious contender for the 2020 event.

The National Olympic Committee of the United Arab Emirates has estimated that 70% of infrastructure to host the Olympics was in already place or in the planning stages. However, with recent uprising Dubai’s Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum has alluded that 2024 would be a more realistic option.

The Crown Prince who is chairman of the planning commitees said “We fully intend to place a bid once I am totally satisfied that we are prepared to host the greatest sporting event in history in a way that would add value to the Olympic Movement itself,” He added: “Our energy needs to go first and foremost to achieving a just and lasting peace for our youth as the bedrock to a future bid which is most likely for the 2024 Olympic Games.”

Meanwhile in South Africa their Sports and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula has stated that a 2020 Olympic bid will be discussed at a forthcoming cabinet meeting. In May, the South African government surprisingly announced it would not support an Olympic bid, preferring instead to concentrate on the delivery of “basic services to all South Africans”. However, International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge last month stated he believed South Africa is “ready” to host the Olympics prompting renewed speculation about a bid.

“From the ministry of sports, we are quite interested,” Mbalula told Reuters. “So we will go back to cabinet in a week’s time and re-present our case to fit in the information that was not there. In this instance, Durban has put an important bid to us, which is convincing.”

Kazan and Guadalajara to Host Next Two FINA World Championships

The Russian city of Kazan and Mexico’s Guadalajara have been confirmed as the hosts of future editions of swimming’s FINA World Championships, the biggest event on the sport’s international calendar.

Kazan will stage the 2015 Championships while Guadalajara secured the rights to the 2017 event, with Hong Kong edged out in the bidding.

This year’s FINA World Championships started on Saturday in Shanghai, China, while the 2013 will take place in the Spanish city of Barcelona.

Kazan bid team communications director Irina Shadrina said: “It’s really great for our city. We have Moscow and St Petersburg but nobody knows about the other cities and now we want to be the sports capital in our country. The aim is to make Russian people to be healthier, to build more swimming pools for children.”

Kazan will host the Championships a year after Sochi will bring the 2014 Winter Olympics to Russia.

Mexican Swimming Federation president Kiril Todorov said winning the 2017 hosting rights was a “dream come true” and added: “It is time to move to the next level (with) the opportunity to hold the crown jewel of our sport in one of the most beautiful cities in Latin America.”

Mexico Sports Minister Bernardo De La Garza said: “We are extremely proud to have been awarded this event and, most of all, to have earned the trust of FINA bureau members. We are eager to start and look forward to welcoming the world to Guadalajara in 2017.”

Rio Launch USD378m Contest for ’16 Olympic Park Master Plan

Rio’s Government has launched a US$378m international competition, in partnership with the Institute of Architects of Brazil (IAB) and coordinated by the Instituto Rio 2014/2016, to design the Olympic Park master plan for the 2016 Olympic Games.

The Olympic Park is spread over more than a million square metres and is due to host 15 different competitions during the Games with some of the facilities being permanent and others might be used for other purposes after the Olympics, including setting up the Olympic Training Centre (TOC) which it is hoped will train future elite members of Brazil’s Olympic team.

At least least 60 per cent of the area will be used after the Games for projects like hotels, and commercial and residential use and according to Rio’s Economic Development Secretary, Felipe Goes, the projects will have to take into consideration the existing facilities built for the 2007 Pan-American Games.

The majority of the facilities will be built on Rio’s race track – the Nelson Piquet Autodrome in Jacarepagua, which will be demolished as part of the redevelopment.

Officials also stressed that the environmental aspects of the project will be taken into consideration, such as the low water and energy use and the preservation of nearby lagoons.

Felipe Garcia, the secretary of Municipal Development for Rio, stated: “The chosen project must consider environmental concerns and avoid unnecessary Governmental expenditures.

“The project is of paramount importance, because the world will see the Games through the Olympic Park.

“The winner is the one that best combine the Olympics infrastructure with an excellent exploration of the urban area.”

Companies will have to present the projects by the end of June and foreign firms can enter providing they have an office or representative in Brazil. The winning project is due to be announced by mid-July.

The jury that will decide the winner will consist of representatives from Rio 2016, the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), Rio City Hall, the Federal Government, five consultants from IAB and two international judges.

Another contest will be held to choose the design of the facilities, with the President of Rio 2016 and the COB, Carlos Nuzman adding: “The concern is we will be ready to stage the test events a year before.

“But the IOC are satisfied that we are acting within the time and have enough time to build the Olympic Park.”
