Hilary Poole Named New CEO of Netball New Zealand

Netball New Zealand have announced the appointment of Hilary Poole as the organisation’s new Chief Executive.

Poole was the stand-out candidate from a number of strong applicants and replaces long-standing Chief Executive Raelene Castle.

NNZ Board Acting Chair John Bongard says the high calibre of applicants made for a difficult decision but Hilary’s combination of commercial background and sport governance experience meant she was best person for the job.

“We are absolutely delighted with the appointment of Hilary to lead Netball New Zealand into the next growth phase”, he said.

Hilary has vast commercial, leadership and governance experience and has advised some of New Zealand’s leading businesses in a range of industry sectors. Hilary has been the CEO of Hockey New Zealand and the Hockey Foundation since 2009.  Hilary was awarded the 2012 CK Doig Award for excellence in sporting leadership and has previously held senior roles at Bank of New Zealand, and GE Capital.   Hilary will join both the Boards of Netball New Zealand and Trans-Tasman Netball Ltd (ANZ Championship).

“I am hugely excited to be given the opportunity to lead Netball, it is such an important sport for New Zealand, and I look forward to the challenges this will bring”, said Poole.

The Netball New Zealand Board has appointed Malcolm Harris, who is currently their independent board member on Trans Tasman Netball Ltd as interim CEO following Raelene Caste’s departure to the Canterbury Bulldogs, until Poole starts in early October.

London 2012 Unveils New Get Ahead of the Games Website to Avoid Congestion

The government has encouraged businesses and employees in the London to make alternative journey plans in an effort to avoid the anticipated congestion during the Olympic Games this summer.

Commuters will be able to use a new website which highlights potential congestion areas during the Olympics, purchase while the government has launched a multimedia advertising campaign to raise awareness of potential problems.

London’s transport network has been the subject of £6.5 billion worth of improvements ahead of the games as the capital plans to cope with the additional three million daily journeys expected during the Olympics, on top of the 25m already made each day.

Transport secretary Justine Greening said that businesses and staff should have more flexible working arrangements during the games and said that London 2012 and Transport for London (TfL) had been working with businesses to ensure they had contingency plans. She added that government staff would not be exempted and that her own department would be changing half of its transport plans.

Commuters will be given advice on how to change the time and route of their journeys, with half-hour delays possible at some of the busiest stations.

Transportation is but one of the issues that could affect businesses during the Olympics. Fears persist that the demand placed on mobile networks during the games will push the UK’s wireless infrastructure to its limits.

This has led to plans to create a free Wi-Fi network around London in an effort to cope with demand, while Ofcom has announced it is going to borrow spectrum from the military. There is also concern that the risk of a cyber attack during the games is high and London will be reportedly be protected by ‘unprecedented levels’ of cyber security.

South African World Cup Cities Bid to Host 2013 African Cup of Nations

The six cities that hosted the successful 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa will be bidding for the right to host the 2013 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

This has triggered a inner-country bidding war between Johannesburg, cheap sale Cape Town, Durban, Polokwane, Rustenburg and Nelspruit, who were all hosts of the 2010 World Cup.

While 32 teams took part in the World Cup, only 16 teams will participate in the 2013 Afcon matches and this means fewer venues will be required for the games that will be played.

South African Football Assocaition president Kirsten Nematandani — revealed that the bidding process would start early this year. “We will receive the bids from the cities that have expressed interest when the process starts early this year,” he said.

“We will then make our decision on the venues that we will use. The good thing is that we have world-class facilities that were good enough for the World Cup so we are confident that our venues are more than adequate,” he added.
