David Gold wants Beckham support for West Ham stadium move

Co-owner of Premier League side West Ham United, David Gold, has said that former England captain David Beckham could play a key role in helping the club move to the Olympic Stadium after the London 2012 Games.

Beckham played an important part in helping London get the 2012 Games, and is undertaking a similar role for England’s bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 2018 or 2022.

Gold said: “David Beckham could play a massive part, because of his roots, in helping West Ham win the Olympic Stadium.

“We know what a great ambassador he is. Now we see David as not just an ambassador for West Ham but also for East London where it all started for him.”

West Ham are one of several bidders to take over the stadium following the Games.

Sky Sports Expands NFL Broadcast Deal to Include ‘Monday Night Football’

British pay-tv broadcaster Sky Sports has secured a new deal with the National Football League (NFL) that includes rights to air ‘Monday Night Football’ from 2015 in a new five year agreement.

From 2015, Sky Sports viewers will be able to enjoy over 80 live fixtures a season, including up to five games each week of the regular season, the playoffs and Super Bowl.

Sky Sports’ coverage will also include all matches from the NFL’s International Series as teams travel to the UK for regular season match ups, which has seen sell out games at Wembley since 2007.

Sky Sports Managing Director Barney Francis said: “We’re delighted to be awarded the rights to Monday Night Football as part of this fantastic new deal for even more live American Football.

“The agreement means Sky Sports viewers can enjoy all the drama, excitement and unpredictability from the NFL until at least 2019.  Our partnership with the NFL spans two decades and we look forward to helping the sport continue its huge growth in popularity in the UK and Ireland for years to come.”

Managing Director of NFL UK Alistair Kirkwood said: “Sky Sports has been a fantastic partner for 20 years and we are delighted to have agreed a deal that will extend that partnership to a quarter of a century.

“Sky’s coverage of the NFL and their support for the sport in this country has been an important element of our growth and we look forward to seeing their coverage expand and develop over the next five years. It is fantastic for our fans to have long-term certainty about where they can watch so many NFL games and I am sure they will welcome this exciting news.”

Michael Carter Named New Chairman of Wakefield Trinity Wildcats

English Rugby League team Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have named Michael Carter as their new chairman.

Carter, 44, takes over from Andrew Glover who will remain with the club as a director and oversee their move to a new stadium.

Local businessman Glover took control of Wakefield in February 2011 after bringing the club out of administration and he now hands over to Carter, who has been a shareholder since January 2012.

Glover said: “Michael has given a lot both in terms of investment and his input into the running of the club and we felt that the time was right that this was formally recognised with making him chairman of the board.

“We’re entering a crucial period with the re-structuring of the competition from 2015, the move to Newmarket and the launch of our Sport & Education Academy this September.

“It’s important that we retain stability but also that there is someone who can come in with a slightly different perspective to ensure we continue to drive forward.

“My day-to-day involvement with the club won’t alter dramatically but it will allow me to focus on a few key areas that are vital to us becoming a sustainable business, namely Newmarket and the Sport & Education Academy.”

Carter said: “I’m looking forward to playing a more active role in the running of the club and continuing to work towards our primary objective of ensuring we are a Super League club when we become the anchor tenants of the Community Stadium at Newmarket.”

Istanbul & Tokyo Rated 2020 Favourites by BidIndex

Istanbul and Tokyo are the two leading  2020 Olympic bid campaigns according to results from GamesBids.com’s BidIndex .
BidIndex is designed to rate Olympic bids on how they will fare  based on IOC voting patterns.
The previous two bid winners, Rio 2016 and PyeongChang 2018,  started and ended their campaigns with the highest BidIndex scores.
The difference between the Istanbul and Tokyo bids is slight but they are significantly ahead of Madrid’s campagin, which is ranked third.
Istanbul  scored 60.20 on the BidIndex scale, an improvement on the final score of 59.46 when the city was eliminated from the 2012 campaign and far higher than the 2008 score of 53.94.
Turkey’s commitment to the Olympic movement, a favourable economy compared to European rivals and Istanbul’s persistent bidding that has helped evolve a compelling plan are key factors resulting in the bid’s top score.
Istanbul’s bid is the most volatile and will be at risk of failure if Turkey’s bid to host the UEFA 2020 European Football Championships is successful.
Turkey could be awarded Euro 2020 on Tuesday if there are no other bidders and the tournament is awarded by default.  Istanbul officials would have to convince the IOC  the city is capable of hosting two major events in a year.
Tokyo is just 0.28 points behind Istanbul. Tokyo’s main strengths are its finance, infrastructure for transportation and tourism, major sport event experience and a strategic legacy plan.
Third ranked Madrid has score of 55.10
The Host City Election to be held in Buenos Aires on September 7, 2013.
