ESPN to Broadcast NFL Feeder League FXFL

The Fall Experimental Football League (FXFL) has signed a broadcast agreement with ESPN who will deliver FXFL’s inaugural season through ESPN3, ESPN’s live multi-screen sports network.

The agreement will provide national coverage of the League on ESPN3 across screens through an affiliated video or internet provider.

“ESPN is the gold standard when it comes to delivering high-quality sports broadcasting, and we are thrilled to be able to participate with ESPN3,” said FXFL Commissioner Brian Woods. “The ability to stream the League’s games via the Internet will provide FXFL fans with an opportunity to see out-of-market games, and ultimately showcase our players, coaches and referees as the next generation of professional talent.”

In a recent segment on ESPN’s television and radio simulcast “Mike & Mike” show, co-host Mike Golic said “There needs to be a minor league in football. Not a competing league, not one that plays a different kind of football, one that essentially is a feeder league to the NFL.”

Oldham Athletic Chairman Will Not Sell to Koukash if Stadium Move Wanted

Simon Corney, the Oldham Athletic chairman, is not interested in selling the League One club to Dr Marwan Koukash if it will result in the team leaving Boundary Park.

Dr Koukash, who also owns rugby league club Salford Red Devils, has expressed an interest in buying Oldham, but would also want to build a new stadium.

But the club has a £5.7million deal with the local council to redevelop Boundary Park, Corney confirmed Oldham will not be leaving their current home.

“This is the home of Oldham Athletic and has been for a long time, over 100 years,” Corney told Sky Sports News. “We waited a long time to get this new stand, which has been six or seven years in the making.

“It’s finally coming to fruition and I see no reason at all to want to leave here.

“We spoke about six or seven months ago and had a very nice chat. He’s a great guy and is very much into his sport.

“Look at what he’s done for Salford, he’s revolutionised the place. You hear about and read about his wonderful horse racing empire. He’s a top guy, but unfortunately he wants to build a destination stadium for both rugby and football, and that doesn’t tie up with our plans here.

“The council here has been fantastic and has helped us to get to the stage we’re at now. I’ve been here 10 years and have always wanted to redevelop Boundary Park.

“This stand will hopefully be the first of two or three stands that we want to build. At this stage, it’s (the takeover) not going to happen unless he decides he wants to invest in the club and remain at Boundary Park.

“I don’t really need to dig my heels in. It’s our club, we own the land and there’s nothing really to talk about. It could be Marwan, it could be anybody, but the club is staying here.

Hungary Withdraws Bid for 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games

ambulance 255, shop 255, impotent 0.917969); text-align: justify;”>Hungary, one of five countries confirmed as official candidates to stage the FEI World Equestrian Games in 2018, has withdrawn from the bidding process.

The Hungarian capital Budapest had been named as one of the five 2018 bid cities earlier this month, but in a letter to FEI Secretary General Ingmar De Vos this week, the President of the Hungarian National Federation Vilmos Lázár confirmed that the Hungarian bid has now been withdrawn.

In the letter Mr Lázár stated that the Hungarian Federation’s Board had made the decision to withdraw the Budapest bid as there were two candidates from the same region. Hungary’s immediate neighbour, Austria, is also one of the official candidates to host the FEI World Equestrian Games in 2018.

Mr Lázár said that his Board hoped that the withdrawal of the Hungarian bid would enhance the chances of Austria staging the Games in 2018.

“Of course we are sad to lose the Hungarian bid for 2018”, FEI Secretary General Ingmar De Vos said, “but we respect the National Federation’s decision and admire its generous support of the neighbouring bid from Austria. We still have four very strong candidates in the mix and it will be a very exciting bidding process. We very much look forward to welcoming them all to FEI Headquarters next month.”

The four countries still in the running to host the FEI World Equestrian Games in 2018 are Rabat (MAR); Bromont (CAN); Vienna (AUT) and Wellington (USA). Bidding teams from the four bid cities will come to FEI Headquarters in Lausanne for a meeting on 11 July.

This brings to 72 the number of medal events at the Sochi 2014 Games and is the first time that Para-Snowboard events have been included in the Paralympic programme.

Originally called Adaptive Snowboard, the sport is practiced worldwide by hundreds of athletes.

Xavier Gonzalez, the IPC’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “Snowboard is a fast paced and extremely exciting sport and we are delighted that it will form part of the Alpine Skiing programme at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games.

“I would like to thank Sochi 2014, NPC Russia , Russian Government, the World Snowboard Federation and the IPC Athletes’ Council for all supporting the inclusion of these two extra medal events.

“It is important for the growth of the winter Games that there are more sports and more medal events to contest. I am particularly looking forward to see how athletes perform in this exciting new discipline and believe it will prove extremely popular with spectators and TV viewers alike.”

Dmitry Chernyshenko, President of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee, said: “Snowboarding is a young and exciting sport and one which is attracting new audiences and participants everywhere.

“Its inclusion in the Paralympics programme will give a further boost to the promotion of Paralympic sports across Russia and highlights the opportunities that sport provides to everyone. It also reflects our determination to deliver the most innovative and successful Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in history.”

Gunnar Tveit, World Snowboard Federation (WSF) President, said: “The WSF are thrilled by the decision to include Para-Snowboard in the Paralympic programme of the Sochi 2014 Winter Games. Together with the IPC, the WSF National Snowboard Associations, and riders, we have been working towards this goal for the last six years.

“Knowing that the riders will have the chance to compete in the sport they love in 2014 is rewarding not only because the athletes will be recognized for their hard work but also because the inclusion of Para-Snowboard in the Sochi 2014 Winter Games will provide an unprecedented level of exposure to the sport.”

The Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games will take place between 7-16 March 2014. Also included in the Alpine Skiing programme are Downhill, Super G, Super Combined, Giant Slalom and Slalom events. Nordic Skiing will see a number of Biathlon and Cross Country events contested whilst other medal events will take place in Ice Sledge Hockey and Wheelchair Curling.

The qualification criteria for the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games will be published on Monday 28 May 2012.

Vancouver, Canada staged the last Paralympic Winter Games in 2010. The event featured 502 athletes from 44 countries who contested 64 medals. Germany topped the medals table winning 13 golds.

Orlando City Announced as Latest MLS Franchise

Major League Soccer have announced a new franchise in Florida, symptoms with Orlando City SC becoming the 21st franchise in the league.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber, allergist OCSC majority owner Flávio Augusto da Silva, impotent and OCSC President Phil Rawlins made the announcement Tuesday evening at Cheyenne Saloon, the same venue where over 20 years ago Orlando was named as a host city for the 1994 World Cup. The event was also attended by numerous local politicians including Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs.

“We are proud and excited to welcome Orlando to Major League Soccer,” Commissioner Garber said in a press release. “From the success of the Orlando City Soccer Club, to the incredible fan support and passion in the community, this is a new market that really excites us. We have great confidence in Flávio Augusto da Silva, Phil Rawlins and the rest of the Orlando City ownership group. They love this sport, our league and this city.”

The team also confirmed that it will begin play in 2015, alongside another MLS expansion team, New York City FC.

“It is a dream come true to bring MLS to Orlando,” said Rawlins. “The fans in Orlando have clearly demonstrated that they are ready for MLS, and we look forward to celebrating with them and working together to set a new standard in this country. We have watched the evolution of MLS, and we are thrilled to join what has become one of the fastest growing and most exciting leagues in the world.”

The move means that MLS has a presence in Florida for the first time since the end of the 2001 season, when the Miami Fusion and the Tampa Bay Mutiny were both contracted.

Before the announcement, Orlando City had been competing in USL PRO, the third tier of the U.S. soccer pyramid. In that time the club has claimed two regular season titles as well as two postseason championships in the last three years, while drawing over 8,700 fans per game during the 2013 campaign.

Plans are also in the works to build a new downtown stadium. Over the last three months, OCSC secured funding from both the city of Orlando as well as Orange County that it will put toward construction. The club is hoping to break ground on the project in the spring of 2014.

Rugby Expo Announces Main Stage Debate on the Future of European Club Rugby

CEO’s from Premiership Rugby, Edinburgh Rugby, Ospreys and M&C Saatchi take to the stage to debate the biggest game changer for the sport since turning professional.

For the past two years representatives from ERC, Premiership Rugby, Top 14 in France and a number of constituent bodies have been in discussions about the future design and configuration of European rugby competitions.

While in recent days there appears to be movements towards a resolution in the tournament’s structure and design, many questions remain around the plans for next year’s cup competitions involving club sides from England, France, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Italy in what could see the most fundamental changes to the European club game since the sport turned professional in 1996.

Understanding the detail around who will govern the new tournaments and the relationship between the clubs and the unions, who will own and sell the commercial rights, who will broadcast the matches and how the revenues will be distributed amongst the clubs have all yet to be communicated to the wider rugby public as media interest in the negotiations intensifies.

With so much to debate and the stakes so high for all involved, Rugby Expo is delighted to be hosting the biggest live debate for the sport in 2013 as Premiership Rugby CEO Mark McCafferty, Edinburgh Rugby CEO David Davies, Ospreys CEO Andrew Hore and M&C Saatchi CEO Steve Martin, who will discuss the view of potential sponsors, take part in in a main stage discussion on the future plans for European rugby and how the changes to the new tournament will impact the game.

The panel discussion takes place in the Rose Suite at 12.00 and is sure to be standing room only. With the exhibition floor sold out and agreements with Premiership Rugby, Pro 12 and the Championship guaranteeing the largest club attendance at the event since its launch in 2008 if you don’t want to miss the debate of the year at rugby’s biggest B2B networking event of the year please contact Jason McMahon on +44 (0)7881 288900 or at jason@rugbyexpo.com.

He covered the 1996 and 2000 Olympics as a journalist and the 2012 Games in his Nike capacity.

Walter Smith Led Consortium Launches Late Rangers Bid

Former Rangers manager Walter Smith is to head-up a new group which today launched a £6 million bid to takeover Rangers.

The bid was launched a lunch-time today which comprises multi-millionaire businessman Jim McColl, and other wealthy Rangers supporters in the local business community.

Duff and Phelps have said they have a binding contract with Charles Green for a £5.5m asset sale, which kicked in after today’s £8.5m CVA offer was formally rejected.

If that falls through Smith’s consortium will look to pounce on the deal.

Even if Mr Green does proceed and complete a deal inside the next 24 hours, the £6m offer now on the table would present him with a quick £500,000 profit to move the assets of a newco on straight away and he could depart the scene.

Smith released a statement today that read: “I can today confirm that following talks over the last few weeks I am leading a new bid for Rangers Football Club.

“I have been assisted by Jim McColl, Douglas Park and other prominent Scottish businessmen with a shared objective – that Rangers Football Club should be in the hands of Rangers people who will stabilise the club and protect it from future situations like we find ourselves in today.

“With this in mind, representatives have, on behalf of my group, made representations to BDO, Duff and Phelps and indeed Charles Green, notifying them of our willingness to offer on the “Newco” basis on which Mr Green is proceeding.

“We would call on Mr Green to step aside and allow us to proceed with our deal which is in the best interests of the creditors, the employees, the fans and the various other stakeholders of Rangers Football Club.

“None of our group has any desire to own Rangers Football Club but we have put this deal in place to save the Club.

“However, our overriding objective is to ensure that the stadium, the history and everything else magical about Rangers Football Club is protected and nurtured back to good health and provide a platform for Rangers for generations to come.

“Let’s be clear, this is an acquisition designed to stabilise the Club and ensure history does not repeat itself.

“We are not in this to take money out of the Club but more so to do whatever it takes in a turnaround plan to ensure within a few years the Club can be passed on intact and to the right people.

“The supporters should be under no illusion that it will be extremely hard but with their support we can overcome financial hardship that lies ahead by lending their support to what we feel is the correct way forward – for Rangers people who know the Club inside and out to control its destiny.

“The prominent Scottish businessmen involved have agreed to provide acquisition funding to allow myself and a management team to take on Rangers Football Club and make the business self-sufficient with long term sustainability being essential.

“I would hope that this offer is fully supported by everyone in the Rangers Family as without them the Club cannot and will not survive.

“We therefore want to ensure honesty and transparency in everything we do. We want to rebuild Rangers Football Club and in doing so return the institution to the standards it is known for.
