British Consortium Ends Bid to Takeover Leeds United

Sport Capital, the British consortium that was set to take over Leeds United, has ended its attempt to takeover the Championship team.

The group, led by current Leeds managing director David Haigh and including the MD of the club’s sponsors Andrew Flowers, announced their intention to buy a majority share in the club from current owners Gulf Finance House Capital in November.

The consortium had expected the deal to go through in time for funds to be made available for manager Brian McDermott ahead of the January transfer window.

However on Wednesday, Flowers accused GFH Capital of reneging on a deal to sell 75% of their shares to Sports Capital, suggesting that “a number of things have come to light which were not as originally described”.

He was also critical of GFH’s “11th-hour decision” to open talks with controversial Italian Massimo Cellino, the owner of Serie A club Cagliari.

And now Haigh has released a statement indicating that some of the bidding consortium’s backers “ultimately didn’t feel able to deliver the financial backing we had hoped was agreed to take the club forward”.

Haigh continued: “Despite this, the future of this club remains the most important thing to me personally and I remain totally committed to putting the right team and backing in place to ensure that Leeds United can move forward.

“It is an indication of that commitment that in recent months the Sports Capital consortium and I personally have injected substantial sums into the club to ensure its viability.

“I have met many, many potential investors over the past year and, sadly, while many are keen to talk the talk they have been unable or unwilling to deliver in financial terms. Nevertheless these talks continue with a number of parties to seek the best possible outcome for Leeds United.”

He added: “At the same time neither my life nor my job has been made easier by the personal intrusions and abuse directed towards me on social media or by some of the smear campaigns against me personally.

“Equally, some of the speculation & stories published in the media have made things difficult for everyone including the staff, players and supporters.”

BOA Agree to Suspend CAS Case and Re-Open London ’12 Talks

The British Olympic Association (BOA) have revealed that they have temporarily suspended its decision to take its cash row with London 2012 to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The decision came as London 2012 responded positively to a request from the BOA to re-open talks over trying to find a settlement to the affair, pharmacy viagra though a date is yet to be set for the meeting.

The agreement is the first indication that the BOA chairman Colin Moynihan is ready to back down in a row that has left him isolated both domestically and internationally.

A spokesman for the BOA stated: “We have taken the decision to suspend the case before CAS, and have notified CAS of that.

“We have requested a meeting with LOCOG and they have agreed, and the purpose is to continue working together towards a resolution.

“It has been our desire all along to resolve this outside the legal process and we are pleased to have this opportunity with LOCOG.’

The BOA are due 20 per cent of any surplus after the Games but are claiming the cost of staging the Paralympics should not be taken into account when calculating that surplus.

Despite suspending any action with the CAS, the BOA claim that they have not totally withdrawn the threat of taking the case to the courts but the decision to take a step back and try to reach a negotiated settlement means that the case is now unlikely to be heard by the CAS, which potentially could have cost the BOA tens of thousands of pounds if they had lost.

The IOC claimed that the CAS did not have jurisdiction over the dispute because the BOA had signed a contract which gave them the right to have the final say.

A London 2012 spokeswoman said the BOA had approached them with a new proposal, stating: They have said to us they have a proposal they want to discuss and we have always said our door is open if they want to talk.”

The BOA Head of Olympic Media and Communications Strategy, Darryl Seibel spoke to insidethegames, stating: “Social media outlets such as Twitter have undoubtedly become an extremely effective and efficient method of communication for many athletes.

“We are hugely supportive of athletes using Twitter, fully aware of how important it is and conscious of the positive effect it can have, particularly in terms of getting younger generations involved in the Olympic Games and the Olympic Movement.

“We are fully behind that. The guidelines we will be issuing to the individual governing bodies are exactly that; guidelines. They will only provide guidance and give useful advice but athletes will in no way be restricted to say whatever it is that they want to say.

“It will also be up to individual sports themselves to set rules.”
