FA Reveals Interest in Hosting First Game of Euro 2020

The opening game of Euro 2020 may be heading to Wembley after the Football Association (FA) revealed their interest in hosting the opening act of the tournament.

The FA have already shown interest in bringing the final to England’s national football stadium, but the first match also carries high prestige.

“On the basis that someone needs to stand up, we have done it,” FA general secretary Alex Horne told The Times.

“It’s a big game, the opening game. It would be great for London, for Wembley. I pushed it to UEFA, quietly at the moment, but we are going to make a play for it with our bid.”

The UEFA tournament will be staged in cities across Europe, rather than being held in one or two countries as has been the norm.

Istanbul has been widely viewed as the favourite to be awarded the final, with a decision on venues expected to be announced in September of this year.

UEFA Will Announce its FIFA Presidency Allegiance in May

UEFA President Michel Platini revealed yesterday, April 20, that it will decide at the beginning of May which candidate to back in the forthcoming FIFA election campaign.

Platini insisted that European soccer’s governing body had not yet decided whether to support the present incumbent or his challenger, Asian Football Confederation (AFC) chief Mohamed Bin Hammam.

Platini is expected to lobby European federations to support Blatter as the 75-year-old revealed that, if elected for a fourth term, it would be his last. The Frenchman is thought to be keen on the FIFA Presidency himself and would undoubtedly have longer to wait in his pursuit, were Bin Hammam to takeover the helm.

Platini did not say whether he had read either manifesto of the candidates after Blatter released his statement yesterday, but said UEFA would make public its decision a month before the June 1 vote in Zurich.

Platini, speaking after the official hand-over of the Champions League trophy to London ahead of next month’s final at Wembley, stated: “I will make a statement at the beginning of May about the position of UEFA.”

ESPN Launch Free ‘WatchESPN’ App for iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch

An announcement made yesterday, April 7, by broadcaster ESPN revealed that its flagship network ESPN as well as ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3.com are now available to Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks and Verizon FiOS TV subscribers via the new ‘WatchESPN’ App for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, now available on the App Store.

The new initiative comes just in time for the early rounds of the Masters, the National Basketball Association (NBA) Playoffs and the beginning of the Major League Baseball (MLB) season.

George Bodenheimer, president, ESPN, Inc. and ABC Sports, stated: “Innovation continues to drive ESPN. When we launched in 1979, nobody envisioned a day when people would carry ESPN in their pockets.  But here we are.  And we’ve reached this watershed moment for the industry through tremendous collaboration with forward-thinking partners.”

The free WatchESPN App includes a simple user interface that takes the current online viewing experience to the high-resolution, Multi-Touch displays of iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

Once a user downloads WatchESPN from the App Store, they will receive instructions to enter their cable subscriber credentials to enable them to access their favourite ESPN content on their device.

Sean Bratches, executive vice president, sales and marketing for ESPN, added: “This represents the culmination of our efforts over the last five years. We strive to serve the sports fan wherever they consume sports, and I can’t think of a better way to do that than making our networks available to fans whenever and wherever they might be.”

Leeds United Confirm Massimo Cellino Sale

Massimo Cellino is set to receive a 75 per cent stake in Leeds United after the Championship club confirmed the deal, subject to Football League approval.

In a statement on the club’s website, the current owners GFH Capital confirmed that they will retain a 25 per cent stake in the club and Salah Nooruddin will remain as chairman with David Haigh staying on as chief executive officer.

The Cellino family’s company, Eleanora Sport Limited, will be the new owners, provided the Football League rubber-stamps the deal.

Cellino still has to pass the Football League’s ‘fit and proper person test’ at a hearing next week.

The Italian, who is trying to sell Cagliari, his Serie A club, has a colourful past. The 57-year-old agricultural entrepreneur has twice been convicted of fraud and is awaiting trial for allegations of embezzlement – a charge he denies.

The GFH statement said: “The Board has always had as its principal aim the creation of a long term ownership structure through partnership with sound and strategic investors to build on the foundations we have laid for sustainable success for this great club.

“We believe we will have achieved that with this deal. It provides the basis from which Leeds United can move forward to a position which will enable it once again to compete at the highest levels of football.

“That is where this great club belongs and it is nothing less than its fans deserve. Throughout the difficult years, as well as the glory years, they have remained second to none in their support of the club and we as a Board have always appreciated their passion.

“Following the introduction of GFH to the Cellino family which owns Eleonora Sport Limited it quickly became apparent that the family and the company offered both the long term investment and the footballing knowledge necessary to take their place as majority owners of Leeds United FC.

“Everyone on the Board is looking forward to working with our new partners who we hope will be in place at Elland Road very soon.”
