Five Manchester United Greats Agree to Buy Salford City FC

Five legendary Man United players have agreed a deal to purchase non-league English team Salford City FC.

Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Gary Neville and Phil Neville will become the joint owners of this club this summer, pending Football Association and Northern Premier League approval of the deal.

The acquisition of the Evo-Stik League Division One North club is due to be completed later in the summer.

Confirmation of the deal, which has been rumoured for several weeks, comes on the same day as United rejected reports suggesting members of the ‘Class of 92’ could front a takeover deal at Old Trafford.

The group have strong roots in the area and they want to put something back into the community of Salford and surrounding areas.

With Giggs still an active player at United, Phil Neville on David Moyes’ coaching staff and brother Gary involved with England and Sky Sports, it is not yet known precisely what role they plan to take in their new venture.

Gary Neville said: “I had my first trial for Manchester United in Salford at age 11 and I will never forget how important that was to me.

“Salford City FC to me represents those early years, the commitment, hunger, enthusiasm, desire and spirit of football and I am very excited about this venture.”

Scholes said: “We know it will be tough but we will be committed to this from the start and have some very exciting plans going forward.”

Butt said: “Moor Lane’s sporting heritage dates back 320 years, the oldest of its type in the Manchester area and this should be safeguarded so it becomes a lasting legacy for future generations.”

Phil Neville said: “It is important to safeguard the hard work that is done in the lower leagues and it is going to be exciting to be able to feed our experience into the young players.”

Giggs said: “Everyone knows how important Salford is to me, so this is an exciting acquisition that is right at the heart of what we all believe in.

“We want to engage the football community, use our football experience and knowledge to aspire and nurture young talent and being able to do that in Salford makes it even more exciting.”

Salford City chairperson Karen Baird, who was instrumental in the deal, said: “It is an exciting time for Salford City FC and I believe there are many more great achievements to come for the club.

“Without a doubt this deal will result in a very bright future ahead and is a great advert for non-league football.

“The club are in full support of the group and believe it to be a very positive move both for Salford City FC and the City of Salford itself.”

Eccles Resigns as FA Marketing & Comms. Director

The English Football Association’s (FA) marketing and communications director Julian Eccles has resigned from his post after little more than a year in the role.

Eccles was hired by former FA chief executive Ian Watmore after spells at both Ofcom and BSkyB.

FA general secretary Alex Horne said in a statement: “Julian Eccles has resigned from his post as director of marketing and communications at the FA with immediate effect.

“I would like to thank Julian for his contribution to the FA and wish him well for the future. He has been very professional throughout his time here and I am grateful to him for introducing a number of valuable initiatives and ideas to the organisation.

“Details of how the FA will manage the functions within communications, marketing and public affairs will be communicated in due course. The FA will not be making any further comment at this time.”

Eccles resignation comes during a turbulent period at the FA, starting with Watmore’s resignation in March last year before ex-chairman Lord Triesman resigned from his posts at the FA and England 2018 exactly one year ago yesterday, after a newspaper published a transcript of a conversation where he repeated gossip about rival World Cup bids.

After England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup failed in dramatic fashion the acting chairman Roger Burden ruled himself out of a permanent position, claiming he could no longer work alongside FIFA. That was followed by the appointment of a new chairman in David Bernstein whose short reign at the FA has been a busy one after the announcement of a Parliamentary inquiry into soccer governance.

Brazil ’14 WC Organising Chief Play Down Preparation Fears

After FIFA president Sepp Blatter again criticised the slow pace of preparations for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, denture the president of the 2014 FIFA World Cup organising committee Ricardo Teixeira tried to play down fears that stadia at Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo could miss out on staging games during the tournament.

Blatter said on Monday that Brazil’s preparations were “not progressing very quickly” and warned that the venues in Brazil’s two largest cities were running the risk of not being involved at the 2013 Confederations Cup, the official warm-up tournament for the World Cup.

However Teixeira, Brazilian Football Confederation chief, insisted he had been guaranteed by the state of Rio that the famed Maracana stadium, which is due to host the World Cup final, was scheduled to meet its reconstruction deadline.

With regard to the Sao Paulo stadium, a project for which local club Corinthians is still looking for private investors, he added: “We have the guarantee from those involved that it will also be delivered in time.”

Work on almost all of the 12 World Cup venues in the country is thought to be behind schedule, while there are also concerns over improvement work at airports in Brazil.
