Manchester Council Agree to Naming Rights Sale of City’s Stadium

According to media reports English Premier League soccer club Manchester City has been granted permission by the City’s council, to look for a multi-million pound deal to sell the naming rights of the stadium.

The Blues required the go-ahead from the council, which owns the former Commonwealth Games stadium, to rename Eastlands.

The club can now look for a new title sponsor of the venue, which is still officially named the City of Manchester Stadium, in a deal that would boost revenues as they struggle to meet UEFA’s new financial fair play rules.

With City posting a loss of £121m (US$193.75m) last year, the new rules in place state that clubs playing in Europe must be close to breaking even within three years.

If the naming rights can be sold for big money than the club may well come close to achieving the required feat. A recent example saw league rivals Arsenal sell the rights to its stadium to the Emirates airline for around £100m ($161m) in 2006, in a deal running until 2021.

City signed a 250-year lease on their current stadium, after moving from it’s previous home at Maine Road to Eastlands in 2003, which sees the club pay a set rate to the council, regardless of attendances.

According to media reports, no deal has yet been made, but shirt sponsor Etihad Airways is expected to be amongst the front runners.

FA Committee Rejects Hull City’s Request for Name Change

Hull City owner Assem Allam has been dealt a blow today in his bid to change the name of the Premier League team after the Football Association confirmed their Membership Committee rejected their request.

The Committee made a unanimous recommendation to the FA Council to reject Hull City’s request to change their playing name to Hull Tigers from next season.

The recommendation, which came after consultation with stakeholders within and outside of the game, will now be discussed and voted upon at a full FA Council meeting on April 9.

The Premier League club’s owner Assem Allam is attempting to rebrand the club as Hull Tigers in order to increase their commercial appeal to potential sponsors, and has described the word City as “common” and “lousy.”

The FA said in a statement: “The FA can confirm its Membership Committee met on Wednesday [12 March] and has made a unanimous recommendation to The FA Council to reject Hull City’s request to change their playing name to Hull Tigers from next season.

“The recommendation, which came after consultation with stakeholders within and outside of the game, will be discussed and voted upon at a full FA Council meeting on 9 April 2014.

“Hull City are able to make a further submission to The FA Council in view of the written reasons, which they have received, before the 9 April meeting.

“A final decision will be made at that meeting. As such, The FA will be making no further comment at this time.”

The decision was hailed by the Football Supporters’ Federation.

FSF chief executive Kevin Miles said: “This is undoubtedly the right decision and credit should go both to the FA and to Hull City fans, who led a tremendous campaign.

“The fans’ groups and fanzines who came together under the City Till We Die banner have protected their club’s heritage and 110-year-old name with great dignity.

“The FA’s decision should also serve as a warning to other owners – such fundamental changes to a club’s identity should not be made without the support of the fans.”

Warner Launches Triesman Tirade, Defended by Bin Hammam

FIFA vice-president Jack Warner, alleged of fresh corruption allegations by former FA chief Lord Triesman this week, has poured further scorn on the sensational allegations that he asked for money to build an education centre in Trinidad in exchange for supporting England’s 2018 World Cup bid.

Warner was named by former England bid chairman Triesman as one of four Executive Committee members who asked for sweeteners during the bid process campaign.

Warner issued a strongly-worded denial, hitting back at Triesman by questioning his own credibility, initially stating: “I have no intention of dignifying that piece of nonsense of Triesman who no doubt feels that he can revive his dying political career by mentioning that piece of foolishness.

“I have never asked Triesman nor any other person, Englishman or otherwise, for any money for my vote at any time.

“In the English World Cup campaign, before he was unceremoniously kicked out, I have spoken to Triesman, on his initiative, only on three occasions, while I have spoken to his other colleagues on other occasions and not one of his colleagues will ever corroborate his bit of trivia.

“I have been in FIFA for 29 years and this will astound many I am sure including persons like [other England 2018 members] David Dein and Geoff Thompson.

“This is the last I intend to say on the matter.”

However, in a report published in Trinidad today, Warner went on to throw the book at the way England conducted its 2018 campaign, adding: “I laugh like hell because it took those guys from December to now [to know] that I have £2.5m (US$4.1m).

“I never asked anybody for anything. When these guys came here [in September 2010], they promised to help. I took them to Longdenville, I showed them a place where they can put a playground. They promised to come back but they never did. That’s all.”

Despite getting his facts wrong in terms of how much England spent on their bid, Warner accused England, who only received two votes, of sour grapes, saying: “What is painful is that the FA spent £19m ($31m) in a bid, 24 persons in the FIFA (incorrect as only 22 were allowed to vote), one is from England, seven [others] of whom from Europe.

“How come not even one person from Europe voted for them? And they’re looking for all different reasons. Why don’t they, in a dispassionate way, sit down and ask why not one European voted for them?”

“The important thing is that I think nobody of substance really takes those guys seriously,” Warner continued.

“Triesman was unceremoniously removed. Where is his credibility? At the end of the day, I hold my head tall because I can stand up and tell the world I never accepted anything. People who know me would be totally dismissive of that nonsense.”

In his scathing tirade, Warner made another mistake, saying that Triesman had claimed that Brazilian Ricardo Teixeira had asked for a knighthood, when actually Paraguayan Nicolas Leoz faced that accusation.

“He [Triesman] said that Ricardo Teixeira asked him for a knighthood but Brazil does not have a single knight, so why should Teixeira ask him to be called Sir Ricardo Teixeira, in Brazil? This is the kind of foolishness you have to understand and bear and what is for me painful.”

Meanwhile, FIFA presidential challenger Mohamed Bin Hammam, who desperately needs Warner’s support in his campaign, defended the Trinidadian CONCACAF President, claiming: “You need, and I need, and the court needs the evidence.

“The evidence is very important. When you come with accusations bring the evidence.”

ODA Begin Search for World Class Olympic Park Contractors

The search has begun by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) to seek world-class contractors to transform the Olympic Park once the 2012 Games have finished, they have announced.

The ODA are looking for contractors to deliver the agreed plans to transform the parklands, infrastructure and those venues not covered by existing contracts for their long term use after the Games.

Once the ODA’s legacy transformation is complete the Olympic Park will be handed over to the legacy owners, primarily the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) and Lee Valley Regional Park Authority.

ODA Director of Design and Regeneration Alison Nimmo said: “We are on track to complete the Olympic Park venues, infrastructure and parklands ready for London 2012 and are putting in place a team to transform them for their legacy use after the Games.

“Legacy was at the heart of the London 2012 bid and 75p of every pound spent cleaning-up what was a former industrial area and creating the Olympic Park is an investment in the regeneration of east London.

“The venues, sports facilities, parklands, allotments, roads, bridges, footpaths, cyclepaths, energy and utilities networks will form the foundation of the long-term development of this part of London for future generations.”

The ODA is advertising two opportunities to deliver the Olympic Park legacy transformation, one for the south and north of the park, which include:

* Completing the 250 acre legacy parklands to create the largest urban public park created in the UK for over a century including wetlands, woods, meadows, heathland, lawns riverside gardens, frog ponds, 250 benches and seating throughout the Park.

* delivering the legacy cycling facilities in the Velopark including minor internal works to the Velodrome, creating a one mile closed road cycle circuit and 7km mountain bike track and modifying the Games time BMX track.

* creating four football fields (2.1 hectares) worth of allotments.

* delivering football fields on east Marsh.

* removing innovative temporary elements of Games-time bridges and concourses to create an intimate park well connected internally and with the local area.

* removing temporary security infrastructure, extending the parklands and completing 15km of cycle and foot paths and a road network connecting the Olympic Park with surrounding neighbourhoods.

* converting venues and other buildings for their legacy use including removing temporary external elements from the International Broadcast Centre and minor internal works to the Handball Arena and Velodrome. The legacy conversion of the Olympic Stadium, Olympic Village and Aquatics Centre are covered by existing contracts.

* removing temporary security infrastructure including the perimeter fence.

Tranmere Rovers Close to Announcing New Owners says Chairman

English League One club Tranmere Rovers are close to announcing new owners, according to current chairman Peter Johnson.

The team has been searching for someone to assume control from the 74-year-old, who claims Rovers need new investment to take them forward.

Johnson is satisfied he has now found the perfect buyer and, barring a late hitch, expects the formalities to be completed swiftly.

“I had to find somebody who loves the club and who the fans can trust,” he said in an interview with BBC Late Kick Off.

“I think I’ve done that now. We expect to make an announcement fairly soon – in a couple of weeks.

“There’s many a slip twixt cup and lip and you never know until the ink’s dry. (But) I’m quite confident that it’s happening.”

Last month Michael Wilde, the former chairman of Southampton, pulled out of the running with a bid which would have seen ex-Chelsea defender Albert Ferrer installed as the club’s new manager.

The Tranmere Rovers Trust also launched a campaign to try and buy the club themselves but are unlikely to raise the funds needed, according to Johnson.

“It does need money, unfortunately it needs a lot of money,” he added.

“We’re one of the poorer clubs and our wage bill is quite low compared to some of the clubs in both our division and the division below.

“They (the prospective new owner) are a bit younger than I am. They’ve got the money and I’m satisfied the fans will be able to trust them.”
