Bernstein Hints at FA Abstention from FIFA Presidential Vote

Football Association chairman David Bernstein has hinted that England could take the remarkable step of abstaining when the FIFA Presidential election takes place on June 1.

The FA are to decide whether to back Sepp Blatter or Mohamed Bin Hammam at a Board meeting on May 19 but Bernstein claimed the third option of not voting at all was still a viable decision.

A number of senior FA figures still resent the way England only received two votes for their failed 2018 World Cup bid, blaming current incumbent Blatter for influencing his colleagues on the executive committee.

Bernstein, when asked as to whether a vote for Blatter was wise, confirmed, “I don’t think it would go down very well” with the public.

Although Blatter’s credibility has been hit hard by the recent spate of corruption allegations made by former England bid leader Lord Triesman involving four Executive Committee members, Bin Hammam’s candidacy has also been tarnished by claims separate to Triesman’s, which allege that FIFA members Issa Hayatou and Jacques Anouma were paid US$1.5m to vote for Qatar 2022.

“There are two candidates and three possible decisions, the other being that we will abstain,” said Bernstein.

“We will look at the fact that this will be Mr Blatter’s last period. We will look at recent events. I don’t think an abstention would be pointless.

“It could end up being a very credible choice, but it depends on what happens over the next week and my colleagues’ views on this.”

Bernstein added his voice to the growing clamour for an Olympic-style voting system to replace an elite few wielding so much power.

“Yes I do think it is too centralised,” he said.

“I think it would be desirable for a voting system based on a national vote…I think  that would be a move towards greater democracy, absolutely.

“FIFA is a very closed organisation and a lot goes on behind closed doors.”

Abramovich to Help Fund Rebuild of Indoor Athletics Arena

Chelsea’s billionaire owner Roman Abramovich is helping in the rebuilding of an indoor arena in Volvograd, Russia, to enable Russian athletes to improve their training and performances.

The decision came after discussions between Abramovich and Russian athletics chief Valentin Balakhnichyov whilst they were together as a part of the Russian delegation in Zurich in December successfully bidding to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup, according to the latter.

Balakhnichyov stated: “The problem is it gets quite cold inside the arena in the winter, making it very difficult to train. Also, the running track is quite old and needs to be replaced.

“I was surprised how smoothly the talks have gone, I know that Abramovich had already asked his people to find out what has to be done and how much it would cost.

“Hopefully, the work could be completed over the summer.”

John Mann, a spokesman for the Russian oligarch, added: “Yes, it’s true that Yelena has approached Roman for help and the talks are ongoing.”

Balakhnichyov added that the new arena would also help other Russian athletes to improve their performances, saying: “Rebuilding the Volgograd arena should help not only Isinbayeva but all other athletes who train there, and we have many others who may follow in their footsteps.

“We also have athletes from the local youth sports academy who regularly train there, so [the] Ministry will also get involved.”

Hull City Hit Back after FA Reject Name Change Request

After the FA Committee rejected the request for Hull City to change their name, the Premier League club have hit back accusing the governing body of prejudice.

Owner Assem Allam wants the team to be known as Hull Tigers from next season, and is balloting season-ticket holders to determine their appetite for change.

A fans-led campaign ‘City Till We Die’ is calling on all supporters to block the proposal and Allam believes the FA took their views on board before coming to their conclusions.

In a statement, Hull City said: “The club is disappointed with the timing of yesterday’s announcement made by The FA. We feel we have been prejudiced right from the outset.

“The FA introduced a new policy to handle our application on the back of consultations with the City Till We Die group, and we therefore feel that our application was already pre-judged.

“This feeling has been reinforced with yesterday’s announcement, as the club feels this will further prejudice the forthcoming ballot of season pass holders.

“However, this is now the time for the silent majority to come forward and support the club’s aspirations. Details of the ballot will be released to season pass holders within the next 48 hours.”

Monday’s setback prompted Allam to repeat his threat to quit the club should he fail in his ultimate goal to force through the name-change.

“If the FA does not allow our plan, we will walk away, put it on the market to sell the club. We would not put it into liquidation; there is a lot of money at stake. I will get my money when I sell,” he said.

London Olympics Opening Ceremony Tickets Yet to be Sold

With the London Olympics opening ceremony just hours away a number of the most expensive tickets for the four-hour-long ceremony remain to be sold but organisers are confident there will be no empty seats for the extravaganza.

The 80,000-seat stadium in Stratford has top-end tickets worth £2,012 and £1,600 still available but should they not be sold today it is likely the seats will be distributed either through the Ticketshare scheme to young people or filled by off-duty members of the armed services. The seats will not be sold off at reduced prices despite speculation to the contrary yesterday.

A spokesperson for Locog, the London organisers, said last night: “We are confident there will not be any empty seats tomorrow. Sebastian Coe did not say there would be price cuts. He said that we will always look at ways that we can get young people to the Games.”

The top-end prices have been criticised and the take-up of hospitality packages has been slow despite growing excitement over both the Games and the ceremony, which starts at 12 minutes past eight tonight. Two dress rehearsals for Danny Boyle’s extravaganza have been held this week in front of crowds of 60,000. Boyle himself spoke on both nights to ask the audience to “keep the surprise” and not disclose details of the £27m ceremony. Feedback to the organisers in the wake of the rehearsals has been overwhelmingly positive. The show seems certain to be well received.

There is burgeoning expectation that Britain will enjoy a hugely successful Games with a third-place finish in the medal table not beyond reach. But Colin Moynihan, chairman of the BOA, yesterday sounded a note of caution. Moynihan insists Britain will have delivered an “absolutely stunning” Games if they can match the achievements of four years ago in Beijing.

Accused Makudi Told He No Longer Heads Thai FA

Head of the Thailand Football Association (FAT) Worawi Makudi, one of the four FIFA Executive Committee members accused by Lord Triesman of asking for bribes to vote for England 2018 during its World Cup bid, has been told he is no president of the body.

The Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) has claimed that he forfeited his position by failing to hold elections by March 31 after he, and members of the FAT Executive Board, postponed an election due to be held last Friday, May 6, because he claimed that some member clubs were represented by more than one voter.

However, deputy SAT governor Somkid Pinthong has told Thailand’s Senate Committee on Sports that the postponement was unlawful because such a move must be endorsed by two-third of eligible voters who were present at the meeting.

Somkid claimed that Worawi is no longer FAT President because his term expired at the end of last year and under their own regulations he could be acting President for a maximum 90 days after that, adding: “This means an election for FAT President must have been completed by March 31.

“As an election was not held by that date, Worawi and his Executive Board members have lost their positions. In fact, they did not even have the authority to call the May 6 election.”

The SAT have now threatened to step in and organise the elections themselves, a controversial claim as FIFA demand the autonomy of its member associations.

Somkid added: “Under the law, at least one-third of member clubs can ask the SAT to call an election for FAT president within 21 days of their request. We do not want to organise such an election but we may have to do it.”

Former England 2018 bid chairman Lord Triesman claimed during a Parliamentary hearing earlier this week that Makudi wanted England to play a game with Thailand, and insisted that the money from the television rights for that game should go directly to him.

Triesman said that “he [Makudi] believed that was critical to making the arrangement a success”.

Wellcome Trust Launch USD1.6bn Offer for Olympic Park

According to the Financial Times, the Wellcome Trust has reportedly tabled an official £1bn (US$1.61bn) offer to the body managing the future of the Olympic Park to buy up the freehold for the majority of the site.

The trust has launched an ambitious bid for the freehold to land that includes the stadium, the aquatics centre and the media centre and has already been named as one of nine bidders for the athletes’ village, which will be converted into 2,800 apartments after the 2012 Games.

Reports in the Financial Times suggest that under the latest proposal, the government and City Hall would see an immediate return on the £675m ($1.09bn) owed to the National Lottery towards its contribution to the Games and could also start to repay the debts for the land in east London.

A spokesman for the trust stated: “In exploring [the Olympic village bid] further, we are giving detailed consideration as to how we may also become investors in the wider Olympic Park and optimise the legacy of the Olympics.”

Other heavyweight bidders for the athletes village development include the Qatari sovereign wealth fund, Sir Robert McAlpine’s construction group, insurance giant Aviva, Hutchison Whampoa and a string of property groups.
