FIFA Report: Bin Hammam Refused to Fully Co-operate with Investigations

A report compiled for the Ethics Committee of world football’s governing body FIFA has said that Mohamed bin Hammam refused to co-operate fully with their investigation into match-fixing.

The FIFA executive committee member and president of the Asian Football Confederation has been suspended since May 29 on charges of bribery and the FIFA Ethics Committee hearing into his case will begin on Thursday in Zurich, Switzerland.

The report has suggested that although Bin Hammam provided “some documents”, he “refused to provide his banking records for review and said that requested telephone records do not exist”.

Seven associations from the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) have told investigators they were offered or accepted cash gifts of US$40,000 at the Hyatt Regency hotel on May 10 after Bin Hammam had made a presentation about his campaign to be FIFA president.

According to the report, although there is “no direct evidence” linking Bin Hammam to the payment of bribes there is “compelling circumstantial evidence” that he was the source of the money.

Twelve of the 25 CFU members present have refused to co-operate with the investigation and could face charges from the Ethics Committee.

The report says that witnesses have stated former FIFA vice-president Jack Warner told the 25 CFU associations on May 11 that Bin Hammam had provided the cash gifts.

It stated: “Several witnesses advised that Mr Warner stated that the cash had originated with Mr Bin Hammam and the cash was given to them at Mr Warner’s suggestion, instead of a more formal gift, such as silver or a plate.”

Fulham Announce Heavenly Branding Partnership

Fulham, London soccer club of the English Premier League, have announced a partnership with branding agency Heavenly, commencing from the 2011/12 season.

Heavenly will provide brand strategy ideas and creative services to Fulham, including for their season ticket campaign, which launches next month, the club’s membership scheme and their new kit launch under the terms of the agreement.

Heavenly has launched a 48-page brand campaign, which focuses on the whole match day experience at Fulham, rather than specifically on the game itself. Three core images are at the centre of this: ‘The Commute’, featuring fans cross Putney Bridge to get to Craven Cottage – the team’s stadium, ‘The Last Yards’, showing the walk through nearby Bishops Park, and ‘Half-Time Show’, displaying a panoramic view of the stadium from across the Thames at half-time.

Fulham’s communication’s director, Sarah Brookes stated: ‘Having decided to review our entire creative strategy, we saw a number of agencies each given the same initial brief to work from.  We were immediately impressed with the level of understanding that Heavenly had regarding the Fulham brand and its core, unique properties.  The energy and enthusiasm shown mirrored our own, and we are all very excited about what can be achieved with the relationship going forward.’

Heavenly’s founder and chief executive, Richard Sunderland, added: “We are delighted to have been appointed by Fulham. We see them as the antidote to the modern game and to the faceless corporates that currently run many of their competitors. As a consequence we feel that there are many similarities between the club and Heavenly and as a London agency are thrilled to be working with a club that has such history and tradition.”

Serie A’s Sampdoria Bought by Film Producer

Serie A outfit Sampdoria has been bought by Film producer Massimo Ferrero from Edoardo Garrone.

Garrone made the announcement in a media conference.

“For reasons that you will understand later I couldn’t say it before,” an emotional Garrone told the assembled media.

“This Press conference is much more difficult for me than the famous relegation one.

“For 12 years I have had the honour to be able to say it’s as if we have saved Sampdoria twice.

“My father did it on January 11 2002, and I did it four years ago after relegation left a chasm within the club both in terms of finance and organisation.

“In these years at Sampdoria there have been sacrifices, bad moments and also some happiness. I have worked in the football world, a very difficult one to understand and a different one.

“We took on a commitment, first with my father and then with my family, to firstly guarantee the future of Sampdoria and then pass it on once we had found someone adequate.

“In three years of work I can say that Sampdoria are solid financially even though they have to work on their operating costs. They have a serious and transparent organisation, as they have had traditionally.

“According to our plans we will have balanced the books by the end of the year, as well as overseeing other projects like the new stadium and the refurbishment of the Bogliasco sports centre.

“Over these years we have looked around Italy and abroad to find someone who could take over from us well.

“Over seven years there were some people who put themselves forward but none of them were credible.

“Working day and night we have finalised this operation and only this morning the ownership was passed on.

“Samp now has a new owner and a new President will all of my support.

“I have taken the promise I made to my family and my father until the end, and now I pass it on to the new President of Sampdoria.

“I present to you Massimo Ferrero, cinematographic producer. ForzaSampdoria forever.”

Plans for Olympic City Unveiled by Istanbul 2020

Istanbul’s plans for a state-of-the-art Olympic city and Olympic Village in 2020 will be the foundation of the 2020 Games’ social and sporting legacy for the city, for sale country and the Olympic Movement.

The bid’s plans for the Olympic Village holds athletes and the Olympic family at its forefront and is totally aligned with the country’s National Sports Plan, which invests some five hundred million US dollars each year into sport engagement programmes. This information was revealed at the bid’s presentation to the IOC Evaluation Commission regarding Istanbul’s sport concept for the Games in 2020.

Istanbul 2020 Director of Sport, Alp Berker, said: “Last year, Turkey’s government announced a 1.7 billion US dollar investment programme which will deliver 415 community sports facilities and 24 new venues between now and 2020. These venues will be designed specifically to meet the long-term requirements of our city and its people as the bid continues to promote sport from grassroots to elite level throughout Turkey’s population, which has an enviably large potential audience of 50% under 25 year old, and 20 million under the age of 20. Our bid believes in the ability of sport to bridge cultures, beliefs and traditions – to inspire enduring harmony.”

Istanbul 2020 has been developing the sports and venues programme in full partnership with the Olympic and Paralympic International and National Federations. With the knowledge that athletes spend around 80 per cent of their time training, the Istanbul bid has made plans for a substantial training precinct to be on their doorstep, in the Olympic Village, as well as for a major medical precinct just north of it – meaning that, for the first time, the Games can provide a Recovery Centre for all Olympic and Paralympic athletes at no extra cost to NOCs.

Turkish volleyball star, Neslihan Darnel, said: “For Istanbul 2020, there will be ideal conditions for all athletes. The only concern for athletes like me will be simply doing what we do best. And after 2020, my generation will experience a profound legacy. It will bring us state-of-the-art facilities to optimise our training, and the best coaches and personnel to help us to be great.

“I love Istanbul, and I love the Olympic Games. And just as I knew, at a young age, that I wanted to become an Olympian, I know that the Games here in Istanbul 2020 will be a catalyst for greatness, for my people, and for the people of the world”.

The bid’s presentation this morning also focused on the legacy plans for each of the proposed zones, clusters and venues. These collectively include environmental remediation programmes; residential, retail and commercial facilities; recreational facilities; and public spaces for young people to congregate throughout the city.

Plans for the Bosphorus Zone represent the most exciting of the legacy plans, since the Bosphorus, “The fabled stretch of water that unites Asia and Europe and the site of much of Turkey’s rich history”, will be one of the most iconic images of the 2020 Games. The legacy for this zone would include a high impact remediation project that will deliver sports and public spaces, as well as an entertainment precinct for the people of Istanbul.

Funding Concerns Result in Malawi Withdrawing Team from London Paralympics

The International Paralympic Committee have revealed Malawi’s Paralympic team have not travelled to London for the 2012 Games due to a lack of funding.

The visually-impaired sprinters Chisomo Jeremani and Janet Shedani were set to compete in athletics at the Olympic Stadium in Malawi’s first Paralympics, but have not now travelled to the UK.

The non-participation of Malawi means 165 nations will be represented over the 11 days of competition, which begin on Thursday. The African country had been due to be one of 15 nations making their Paralympic debuts in London.

The London organisers Locog had provided some money to help fund the trip, but according to officials from Malawi it was not enough to send the full delegation, including guides for the runners.

New Stadium architectures confirm for Bordeaux

Mayor of Bordeaux Alain Juppé has announced that the Vinci Concession and Fayat architectural group has won the right to construct a new 43, herbal 000 seater stadium in the city, unhealthy which will host games at the 2016 European Championships.

The approximate cost will be €165 million (£147 million/$237 million), cialis and is also supported by Herzog & de Meuron, the Swiss architects who constructed the Allianz Arena in Munich, the home of German giants Bayern.

Juppé said: “This new modern, efficient building of a very high quality should be comfortable and accessible for those of limited mobility.”

Triaud said this week that he wants the stadium to have a classic Greek look modelled on other stadiums of a similar appearance around the world.

“I like the principle of a classical Greek construction, peripheral stairs which surround the stadium,” he said.

“I have seen beautiful stadiums in France and elsewhere where you have this impression.”

The new stadium – which is scheduled to open in 2015, a year before France stages the European Championships – will be funded by both private and public sources.

The state will provide €28 million (£25 million/$40 million), with another €15 million (£13 million/$22 million) coming from the Aquitaine region, and €17 million (£15 million/$24 million) from the city of Bordeaux.

Girondins de Bordeaux will then contribute €20 million (£18 million/$29 million) via their owners, TV chain M6, with a further annual payment of €3.85 million (£3.4 million/$5.5 million) over the next 30 years.

Blatter was always out for revenge claims Bin Hamman

Former head of Asian Soccer Mohamed Bin Hammam claims revenge was the only thing on Sepp Baltter’s mind after he was given a life ban from the sport.

The Qatari became the highest-profile FIFA figure to be kicked out of the organisation.
He still remains ademanant in his innocence. “The ban for life shows how much these people are angry and how much they are full of revenge,” he said.

He continues also to refer to the feeling of being guilty before the investigation began.

Asked whether he had paid $US 40,000 bribes to Caribbean Football Union members, Bin Hammam said he had only paid travel expenses for the infamous meeting in Trinidad and Tobago on May 10 and 11.

He remains confident in his appeal and he first do this with the FIFA’s Appeals Committee but admitted he would get no joy there and would have to work through more independent channels.

“Then I should go to the civil courts in Switzerland where we have full confidence.
