‘Cricket in the City’ comes to Birmingham

Birmingham are to host ‘Cricket in the City’ on the 8 August 2011. The all day free cricket festival will take part in the city centre around Victoria Square.

Edgbaston will be hosting the 3rd npower Test Match against India two days later.

‘Cricket in the City’ is a flagship debut event to engage the public and create a local buzz for the upcoming Test Match.

The England and Wales Cricket Board is looking to create more positive enthusiasm right through to the grassroots level of the sport, even more so with the positive results that English Cricket has produced lately.

Public engagement is very much the name of the game when ‘Cricket in the City’ was decided upon.

Administration Dispute Over Indian Hockey Intensifies

Confusion continues to reign across India over the governing bodies running the country’s hockey, one of the country’s most popular sports.

Rival bodies Hockey India (HI) and the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) are competing to control the administration of the sport. However, amidst news that the two bodies agreed to form a joint executive board to run the game on Monday, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) acting president Vijay Kumar Malhotra has rubbished the new truce, labelling it “a bizarre live-in relationship”.

The arrangement to form a joint board was set to run until December 31, 2012. Indian Sports Minister Ajay Maken, who has tried to reform sport in the country since being appointed earlier this year, has been the driving force behind the partnership, although the organisations involved have insisted it is not a merger.

However, Malhotra insisted the National Olympic Committee would only recognise one body.

He said: “We don’t want to open a Pandora’s box which will lead to total chaos in Indian sports.

“Unless a unified body is formed to run hockey, it will not be acceptable. IOA will never accept two co-chairpersons for one federation. This is not feasible and workable.”

On the role of Maken, Malhotra said: “In his bid to be seen as a minister in action, he has become minister in distortion. How can two separate entities run a single sport?”

He added: “This so-called skewed agreement also strengthens IOA’s stand that government should steer clear of interfering in the affairs of sports bodies. It is laughable and highly incredulous to call such agreement good for Indian sports.”

Perform Float Shares Valuing Company at USD958m

Digital sports rights firm Perform announced last Friday, April 8, that it is to float on the stock exchange at 260p per share, giving a market capitalisation of £586m (US$958m).

Perform is the first digital media company since Moneysupermarket.com, four years ago, to float on the main market of the London Stock Exchange.

The company, perhaps best known for delivering the online only broadcast of England versus Ukraine in 2009, had given guidance that the price range for the float would be 255p to 325p.

Perform’s two main sources of revenue are from distributing sports content to bookmakers and online media across the world, and revenue from ads running within content on its own and others’ websites.

The company has made an initial public offering of 25 per cent of its equity and has raised proceeds of £67.5m ($110.4m) for ‘strategic acquisitions and to exploit more fully organic growth opportunities’.

Perform has experienced a compound annual sales growth rate of more than 50 per cent over the past three years.

One Direction Star Seals Doncaster Rovers Takeover

One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson and former Doncaster Rovers owner John Ryan have completed the takeover of the League One outfit, a spokesman for Ryan has said.

The duo will become co-chairmen and equal partners after buying out majority shareholders Terry Bramall and Dick Watson.

A deal had been close before but a move was twice delayed because of negotiations over image rights.

Ryan’s spokesman said: “It’s done, the takeover is complete.”

Tomlinson, 22, was born in Doncaster and is a lifelong supporter of Rovers; he also played for their reserve team against Rotherham in February.

Ryan, who ended his 15-year association with Rovers in November, will be the lesser known of the two men but will doubtless be the more hands-on.

The businessman has extensive football experience and oversaw Doncaster’s rise from non-league to the Championship as well as their move from Belle Vue to the Keepmoat Stadium before stepping aside in November to allow Terry Bramall and Dick Watson to take over.
