IOC President Jacques Rogge Defends Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics Cost
IOC president Jacques Rogge has defended the $51 billion cost the for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics and praised the preparations of the event.
Speaking in an interview with The Associated Press in the Black Sea resort, Rogge said he was impressed by the preparations for Russia’s first Winter Olympics.
“The site is very compact, it’s high quality and is situated in beautiful surroundings,” Rogge said.
Rogge is touring the Olympic venues ahead of the one-year countdown, which will be marked with a dazzling ice show on Thursday.
Most of the venues have already been completed, while thousands of workers are still finishing up some Olympic facilities.
Russian authorities last week announced the latest costs related to the games, saying total spending would come to about $51 billion, which would make Sochi the most expensive Olympics in history.
Rogge said a great deal of the money is going to infrastructure projects, including new roads and railways, which will serve the development of the entire region for decades to come.
“You have to put it into proportion,” Rogge said. “The organisation of the Games is not going to cost a lot of money. But the government … wished to develop the whole area. You cannot just take the cost of the train and the tunnels and the road into the cost of the Games because this tunnel and the train and the road are not meant for two weeks of competition, they are meant for generations to last.”
Rogge also dismissed any concerns about the weather, saying organisers had contingency plans in place in case of adverse conditions. Warm temperatures and rain disrupted some of the snowboarding and freestyle skiing events at the 2010 Vancouver Games.
“I think that the organisers have taken all the precautions to cope with the weather,” Rogge said.
“The weather in the mountains is always unpredictable. There can be too much snow or too little snow, we have seen it in the previous Games. But, you know, if there is such a circumstance then the organisers will react with the plan B.”
Rogge will no longer be IOC president at the time of the Sochi Games. He steps down in September at the end of his 12-year term.

FIFA Receives Documents from Worawi Makudi Defending Allegations
FIFA has revealed that Football Association of Thailand (FAT) general secretary Worawi Makudi has sent documents to defend allegations of misuse of FIFA funds.
Makudi has strongly denied allegations that FIFA grants were used to build a training centre on land he owns. FIFA last month wrote to Makudi, generic an Executive Committee member, ampoule asking him to respond to allegations of misuse of Goal programme funds in an area in which he owns several plots of land. Makudi has previously told Thai media he had signed over the land to the FAT, ambulance but concerns over a potential conflict of interest could lead to FIFA instigating an Ethics Committee inquiry.
Makudi has now supplied documents supporting his argument to FIFA with BBC Sport reporting that world football’s governing body will take “a few days” to examine the evidence. Grants totalling £542,000 ($867,384) from FIFA’s Goal programme were used to build Thailand’s national football centre, along with an artificial pitch.
In May Makudi was named in British Parliament by former Football Association chairman Lord Triesman as one of four FIFA members who sought “bribes” in return for supporting England’s failed 2018 World Cup bid. FIFA subsequently dismissed Lord Triesman’s allegations.
World Series Hockey Signs Up Eight Pakistani Players
Eight Pakistani players have signed up for the ambitious World Series Hockey (WSH).
The Pakistan players, who will participate in this joint initiative between the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) and Nimbus Sport, are Rehan Butt, Zeeshan Ashraf, Mudassar Ali, Tariq Aziz, Adnan Maqsood, Waseem Ahmad, Syed Imran Warsi and Shakeel Abbasi.
The line up from Pakistan includes 3 former captains and a host of current players who have played over 1600 international matches amongst them.
The International Hockey Federation (FIH), however, still maintains that WSH continues to be a un-sanctioned league since it does not have the approval of the “recognised” national federation, Hockey India.
At the same time FIH has also stated that those players who have signed before 31 March 2011 with WSH will not be banned from participating in official national and international competitions.
Rehan Butt too had a few days back voiced his concerns about the lack of recognition for the event.
Those issues seem to have been sorted out and Butt, who will lead a team, says he is excited to be an integral part of the action. “I am honoured to be a captain of one of the teams. World Series Hockey will see a face off between the best international and Indian players and I am proud to be a part of this prestigious and highly anticipated event,” said Rehan.
Nimbus Sport COO Yannick Colaco said, “The response from the players and members of the global hockey fraternity has been overwhelming. The top players from the international arena including Pakistan have signed contracts and the league is all geared up to enthral fans with a spectacular display of skill.”
Nimbus states that the WSH will be held from 15 December to 22 January and will involve 176 leading players — Indian and international — who will showcase their talent in 61 matches. It will be a multi-city franchise-based League with players being allocated to the teams based on the internationally accepted and practised ‘draft’ system.
The inaugural edition of the league will comprise eight teams with matches across as many cities, six of which are Delhi, Punjab, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru. The remaining slots will go to two off Bhopal, Pune, Rourkela, Ranchi, Manipur, Lucknow and Kolkata.
FIFA Looks into Different Time Slots for Qatar 2022 Including January World Cup
Soccer’s world governing body FIFA have revealed they are looking into the possibility of staging the 2022 World Cup in January and February despite president Sepp Blatter previously ruling out the idea last year.
A FIFA task force met at the headquarters in Zurich to discuss three possible time slots for the competition which has already come under scrutiny over corruption allegations in the the bidding process.
Qatar was awarded the World Cup on the widely held understanding that it would be staged in the summer despite the searing heat in the country.
Although Qatar has insisted that a summer World Cup is viable thanks to cooling technologies it is developing for stadiums, training areas and fan zones, there is still widespread concern over the health of the players and visiting supporters.
“Discussions centered around the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and participants were presented with information on the implications of staging the event in winter as opposed to summer, as proposed by the FIFA executive committee,” FIFA said in a statement.
“FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke clarified that, based on the hosting agreement, the FIFA World Cup must be held in 2022.
“The options of January/February 2022 and November/December 2022 were put forward as alternatives to June/July 2022, and initial feedback received.”
Last November, Blatter ruled out a winter World Cup that could clash with the Winter Olympics.
“The FIFA World Cup can only be played in November/December 2022, no way it’s going to take place in January/February,” he told a news conference in Abu Dhabi at the time.
“We have to see how we can have the FIFA World Cup played in winter, but only Nov/Dec are possible.”
