British Basketball mulls 2015 European Championship bid

British Basketball has appointed Capita Symonds Sport & Leisure Consulting to undertake a feasibility study into the potential of hosting the men’s European Championship Finals.
Share Capita Symonds is a division of the Capita Group and employs 4,500 people in over 60 offices across the UK. The Sport & Leisure Consulting team has completed a number of similar studies in recent years, including for the World Athletics Championships, 2014 European Swimming Championships and 2015 Rugby World Cup (for Scotland). The team will be supported by The Sport & Leisure Consultancy.
The study, which is jointly funded by British Basketball and UK Sport, will explore potential venues and logistics of such a major sporting event as EuroBasket being hosted in the UK. If the findings of the study prove positive, and it is given the go ahead by British Basketball and the home nations, a formal expression of interest could be required in early 2011.
At this stage hosting both 2015 and 2017 will be considered by Capita Symonds and such iconic indoor venues as the O2, Olympic Arena 3, Liverpool Echo Arena, Manchester MEN Arena and the new Glasgow Commonwealth Games arena could form part of a future British bid.
The feasibility study into hosting the men’s European Championship Finals is a further strand in British Basketball’s Towards 2016 and beyond (T16) strategy, which aims to provide a lasting legacy for basketball in the UK after the London Olympic games in 2012.
Chris Spice, British Basketball Performance Director, who is leading the study said: “If we do want to be a regular player on the largest basketball stage in Europe and if we are serious about creating a lasting legacy from our participation in the London Olympics in 2012, then we have to host such events as the EuroBasket finals. We are grateful that our vision is being supported by UK Sport and we thank them for their assistance in supporting this feasibility study. Capita Symonds made an impressive bid and we are looking forward to working with them over the coming months to see if this is feasible. We hope the entire basketball community in the UK will be excited by the prospect of hosting a major sporting event on this scale and look forward to their involvement.”
Although British Basketball is playing a leading role into the feasibility study, any formal bid would also need the full backing of the UK basketball home nations.
Keith Mair, CEO from England Basketball commented: “England Basketball strongly supports the initiative taken by British Basketball to obtain UK Sport funding to assess the feasibility of staging the highly ranked men’s EuroBasket tournament in 2015 or 2017. Along with the World Championships and Olympic Games this event ranks as one of the Big Three of international basketball and would attract a great many visitors along with vastly increasing the profile of the sport in Britain.”
Basketball Scotland is also in full support of the work being undertaken, CEO Kevin Pringle stating: “This is another example of the home nations working together for the good of the sport. We all recognise that the potential of hosting either the 2015 or 2017 can only have a positive impact on the sport.”
Will Jones, President of Basketball Wales, commented: “It is important for the long term growth that we are continually looking to unearth opportunities for the sport in the UK. As one of the home basketball nations, it is imperative that we offer our full support and backing to the prospect of hosting a European Championship. We shall continue to work together to ensure a comprehensive feasibility study is compiled.”

Bach Gives Fresh Hope for Baseball/Softball 2020 Olympic Inclusion

Baseball and Softball may have a reprieve following their failed attempt to be on the 2020 Olympic programme after new IOC president Thomas Bach says there is a possibility that the joint organisations may be included in the program for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

“This will be under discussion,” Bach said at a press conference on Wednesday.

“We will have the first broad discussion in December in a meeting of the executive board of the IOC, then the executive board will present its first discussion paper to the IOC session in Sochi.”

Baseball and softball were dropped from the 2012 program after a 2005 vote by the IOC. They failed in a bid to be reinstated for the Olympic program for 2020 and 2024 at an IOC vote in September, but Tokyo’s winning bid has refuelled calls for them to be included when the Japanese capital hosts the games.

While the Olympic Charter states that a sport’s inclusion in the program must be decided not later than the session electing the host city, Bach stressed the need to be flexible.

“I am open for more flexibility in the Olympic program,” Bach said. “But first we have to see what the rest of my colleagues in the IOC think.”

Baseball and softball are very popular in Japan and there are many existing facilities in the Tokyo area that could be used if the sports were included.

Bach was accompanied by IOC vice president, Australia’s John Coates, who heads the coordination commission for the Tokyo Games.

Japan is scaling down the cost of the planned 80,000-seat main stadium following an uproar from some prominent architects who think it’s too big and expensive.

Coates said the IOC is open to changes as long as the cutbacks don’t compromise the basic plan of the facility.

“It’s inevitable that costs will be reduced,” Coates said. “We are always open to that as long as the basic facility isn’t compromised.”

Istanbul Ready to Return to Olympic Bidding Arena

Istanbul are ready to return to the Olympic bidding arena after Hasan Arat, the man in charge of trying to bring the Olympic Games to Turkey in 2020, vowed to return with the “strongest bid yet” and make history by bringing the massive global event to the Middle East for the very first time.

Hasan Arat was in charge of the Istanbul 2020 bid that eventually lost out to Tokyo – despite the city receiving widespread praise during the bidding process.

Speaking ahead of his appearance at the Host Cities summit in Dubai, Mr Arat said Turkey had not given up and would make another bid in the near future.

He said: “Istanbul 2020 had a truly inspiring story. We offered the Olympics the chance to bridge to a brand new culture, to a country and a region that has never hosted the games before.

“One of our biggest challenges was demonstrating to the International Olympic Committee that we, as a city and as a nation, have the capacity to stage a well-organised, well-funded, safe, and efficient Games.

“We showed them this and with the planned investment we ensured that Istanbul was more than capable of hosting the Games in 2020 – but sometimes property owners want to see evidence of you infrastructure in action and already in place.

“We are now better equipped than ever before to host major sports events and we have a greater understanding of what is required to host an Olympic Games.

“Our next bid will be our strongest yet.”

Zaha Hadid Architects to Design Tokyo’s Potential 2020 Olympic Stadium

Zaha Hadid Architects has been announced as the winner of the bid to design the Japan National Stadium which will become Tokyo’s 2020 Olympic stadium should they win the bid.

Eleven international teams were shortlisted for the project but the London-based studio headed by the world’s most famous female architect has triumphed over the competition with a classically ambitious concept which glides over the site in Tokyo.

Due to open in 2018 and host the 2019 Rugby World Cup, the 80,000-seater stadium will also play a key role in Tokyo’s bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympics. Zaha’s concept will not come as a surprise to those familiar with her work as its smooth lines and soft curves are highly recognisable components of the architect’s style.

Respected architect Tadao Ando was the Jury Chair for the competition and stated: “The New National Stadium must provide a solution to many difficult problems. The site conditions pose a challenge in requiring an enormous facility for eighty-thousand people to be composed spatially into a narrow site. The project is expected to not only organize the surrounding traffic, manage the circulation of large bodies of people, and offer an exciting experience for spectators, but also to demonstrate the technology of the highest level to support an operable roof and adjustable seating that will be needed to facilitate a multilayered programme comprising of both sporting events and cultural activities.”

Hadid’s latest project is planned for the site where the Mitsuo Katayama-designed stadium now sits in Kasumigaoka, replacing the original building with an updated structure. Critics are sure to compare this new concept with Hadid’s recently completed Aquatics Centre for the London 2012 Olympics, an equally elegant form whose flowing roofscape bears some resemblance to that of the new Japan National Stadium.

Exeter Chiefs Secure Leeds Carnegie Shares

Exeter Chiefs have secured extra funding for next season after Leeds Carnegie’ shares in the Premiership of £5million.

The Chiefs became one of 13 holders of ‘P’ shares which will entitle them to £600,000 per season after buying from Premiership Rugby’s central funding. Exeter chairman and chief executive Tony Rowe says the extra money will go to head coach Rob Baxter to strengthen the playing squad.

“As much of the extra income as possible will go into the playing budget. I’m sure Rob will have targets in mind to sign,” he told the Rugby Paper. For the second successive season Exeter posted a profit and they are one of only four clubs to be in the black. They also hope to have plans approved next month to redevelop Sandy Park into a 20,000-seater stadium.

Exeter had the option to secure ‘P’ shares from either Leeds or Bristol as both clubs have been outside the top flight for more than a year.

Leeds chief executive Gary Hetherington said: “We didn’t want to sell our ‘P’ shares but we had no choice in the matter. If we go back in the Premiership we will need the ‘P’ shares, which is why we will ring fence that money until such time as we return to the Premiership. Then we’ll look to repurchase those shares from the relegated club.”
