Exclusive: Lotus CCO Suggests F1 Drivers Chosen on Talent Rather Sponsorship Value

Lotus Chief Commercial Officer Stephen Curnow has discussed the increased sponsorship merits of Lotus F1’s current driver line-up and suggested drivers are selected based on their talent rather than the monetary value they bring through sponsors.

While many teams use “pay-drivers” drivers brought in as much for sponsorship opportunities as for driving talent Curnow says that Lotus have taken a more long-term view.

“We made a decision last year to find the best two drivers to bring on-track success to the team, stomach even if that meant sacrificing short-term revenue,” Kernow told iSportconnect exclusively.

“The arrival of both Unilever, Avanade and Microsoft in a matter of weeks were clear evidence that partners embraced our long term ambition.”

As many of the current Formula One teams have announced their drivers for the 2013 season, it is perhaps surprising given Lotus’ strong position that only one of their drivers – Kimi Raikkonen – has signed up, while Romain Grosjean’s future remains uncertain after an inconsistent season.

After celebrating their maiden Formula One win at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Curnow told iSportconnect exclusively: “I think we have a very attractive package of drivers that complement each other on track.”

Talking about the sponsorship opportunities both drivers bring, Curnow said: “Both Kimi and Romain provide very different and interesting opportunities for partners, Kimi having been utilised by Unilever for both Rexona and Clear in some exciting global campaigns, and Romain as the global face of Total.”

CBA Competition Department Director, Bai Xilin, said: “We’ve been talking about how to make it happen recently, and there is no timeline yet. We will keep the media posted when we work out something practical.”{jcomments on}

BCCI Remains Opposed to Mandatory Video Technology

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) remains opposed to mandatory video technology despite backing for the system from the sport’s leading bodies.

Indian officials said their stance was ”unchanged” despite a recommendation for the technology to be compulsory in all tests and one-day internationals.

”The BCCI continues to believe that the system is not foolproof,” a BCCI statement said.

”The board also sticks to its view that the decision on whether or not to use the Decision Review System (DRS) for a particular series should be left to the boards involved in that series.”

India, which accounts for a vast share of global cricket revenues, has been suspicious of DRS since it was trialled during the 2008 test series with Sri Lanka,

But most major cricketing nations, such as England and Australia, support the system.

The recommendation for mandatory DRS, made by the chief executives’ committee of the International Cricket Council, will be considered by the body’s board at a meeting over the next two days.{jcomments on}

NFL Hits New Orleans Saints with Severe Penalties for Bounty Scandal

National Football League (NFL) Commissioner Roger Goodell has reiterated his desire to maintain the integrity of U.S.’s most popular sport with an unprecedented suspension of Super Bowl winning coach Sean Payton for a bounty program that paid players on the New Orleans Saints for injuring opponents.

The league also banned Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis for eight games and indefinitely barred former assistant Gregg Williams for the program. Under the bounty plan, generic about two dozen players, ed led by Williams, sales paid each other as much as $1,500 for targeting opponents such as Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks Kurt Warner and Brett Favre from 2009 to 2011, the NFL said. Payton and the Saints won the Super Bowl after the 2009 season.

The action, among the stiffest penalties ever imposed by the league on a team and its leadership and described by NFL spokesman Greg Aiello as unprecedented, came because the Saints’ behavior, which included misleading NFL investigators, threatened the league’s safety and integrity, Goodell said.

“Clearly, we were lied to,” Goodell said in an interview televised on the NFL Network. “I don’t think you can be too hard on people that put at risk our players’ health and safety.”

Goodell said in a league statement he wanted to send “a strong and lasting message” that the Saints’ conduct was unacceptable. The team also was fined $500,000 and stripped of second-round picks in 2012 and 2013. No players were immediately punished. Goodell said “that’s next up.”

New Orleans Saints said in an e-mailed release: “We offer our sincere apology and take full responsibility for these serious violations. It has always been the goal of the New Orleans Saints to create a model franchise and to impact our league in a positive manner. There is no place for bounties in our league, and we reiterate our pledge that this will never happen again.”
