Rory McIlroy Becomes Omega Brand Ambassador

April 8, 2013

Rory McIlroy has signed an endorsement deal to become a new brand ambassador with Swiss watchmaker Omega.

McIlroy joins the likes of Michael Phelps, Greg Norman, Sergio Garcia, Stacy Lewis, George Clooney and Nicole Kidman as the list of celebrities to be signed up by the brand.

McIlroy, who was the runner-up in the Texas Open said: “’I think it’s a great deal for me. I’ve sort of tried to adopt the strategy that I don’t want a lot of sponsors, but there are a few very big global brands that can reach out to different parts of the world. It’s a great fit.”

Omega president Stephen Urquhart added: “Rory is one of those golfers who lights up every course he plays on. In recent years, he has been golf’s most exciting player and he has already attracted legions of new fans.

“He’s the sort of golfer who is good for the sport and for its image, and we are all looking forward to seeing how far this extraordinary talent will take him.”

Omega has added further golf deals in recent years, including the marketing rights at the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup.

“They’re trying to expand into golf, and they’ve got some great ambassadors already,” McIlroy added.

“I’m delighted to be on board.”

The 23-year-old Northern Irishman nearly missed his starting time in last year’s Ryder Cup and having signed for a watch company, McIlroy jokingly said: “I guess I won’t be late now!”
