January 22, 2015

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has named Kaiser Permanente as its first-ever healthcare partner.

The California-based care consortium has agreed a multi-year deal with the NBA, becoming the Official Health Care Partner of the NBA, WNBA, NBA D-League and USA Basketball.

The deal represents the company’s first partnership with a professional sports league.

The NBA has made it a ‘strategic priority’ to secure a health care partner ever since launching its NBA Fit campaign.

The NBA’s executive vice president of global marketing partnerships, Emilio Collins said: ”This category is one that has been a strategic priority for us. Thinking about the commitment we made as an organization to improving communities and the lives of fans, along with the inclusive nature of basketball and how our players promote health, made the partnership important.

“We couldn’t have ended up with a better result. Kaiser Permanente is an absolute leader in the industry, and a company who as a leader in this industry, will allow us to do so much more to improve the lives of fans.”

As part of the deal Kaiser Permanente will provide medical expertise and consultancy to the NBA on health and wellness programming. The two parties will also collaborate to create an annual NBA Health and Wellness Forum.

The NBA’s senior vice president of global marketing partnerships, Rachel Jacobson said: ”We are going to use their medical expertise to bring great grassroots programming to our millions of fans.

“This programming will include everything from health and wellness clinics to the NBA Health and Wellness Forum, featuring medical experts.”

Additionally as part of the partnership the NBA and Kaiser Permanente will hold 14 community health and wellness events annually across NBA, WNBA and NBA D-League markets.
