FIFA President Infantino Promises New Bidding Process

January 11, 2017

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has stated that the 2026 World Cup bidding process must be ”bullet-proof”, after the controversy regarding the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup tournaments.

”It is absolutely crucial for FIFA’s credibility that we have a bullet-proof bidding process in place for 2026”, the Swiss told the annual Congress of the World Soccer body.

A four-stage process will decide the awarding of the World Cup 2026, with a final decision due in May 2020.

Russia and Qatar will host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups respectively, with both decisions causing controversy. FIFA made the decision on January 10 to expand the World Cup to 48 teams for the 2026 edition.
