UK Sport Rejects Wheelchair Rugby Funding Appeal

February 20, 2017

Sport promotion and funding agency UK Sport has rejected an appeal from Wheelchair Rugby against its funding cut for the Tokyo Paralympic cycle.

Wheelchair lost its entire £3m funding, with UK Sport reportedly keen for the Rugby Football Union (RFU) to support the organisation. The sport’s union currently puts around £100k per annum into supporting Wheelchair Rugby.

Team GB’s Wheelchair Rugby team finished 5th in the Rio Paralympics in 2016, but did win the European Championships in 2015. They have never won a World Championship or Paralympic medal, however,

UK Sport announced their funding figures in December, with a highlighted prioritisation towards sports with the largest medal potential.
