Tokyo’s 2020 Games Bid Receives Huge Political Boost

prescription helvetica, drug sans-serif;”>Tokyo’s hopes for the 2020 Olympic Games have received a huge vote of confidence after they secured key political backing in the shape of bipartisan support from Diet Members, led by Japan’s former Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama.

With Diet being considered as Japan’s highest organ of state power, the presence of various politicians such as Tokyo Metropolitan Government members, athletes, and senior bid officials at the event held by the Parliamentary Caucus for Tokyo 2020 Bid Promotion is sure to stoke the fire for Tokyo 2020’s bid.

The support from these figures will be a monumental positive for Tokyo as Diet is considered to be Japan’s highest organ of state power.

“It is important for us as members of Parliament to understand how we can best support the Tokyo 2020 Bid Committee,” said Hatoyama, chairman of the Parliamentary Caucus for Tokyo 2020 Bid Promotion. “With the establishment of this organisation, and the London Games impending, this year is an extremely important year for us all. I kindly ask for everyone’s support in our efforts towards bringing the Games to Tokyo in 2020.”

Tokyo 2020 CEO Masato Mizuno added: “I am extremely delighted and encouraged by the widespread support Tokyo 2020 received from the various Diet Members that lead our country. I look forward to working closely with everyone; ultimately allowing us to receive the greatest honour of playing host to the 2020 Games.”

Following Rome’s exit from the running last week, Baku, Doha, Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo remain in contention for the 2020 Games with the IOC due to vote on the host city in September 2013.
