Tokyo Citizens Overwhelmingly Back 2020 Olympics Bid

January 30, 2013

A poll has found that 73% of the Tokyo population – almost 10 million people – want the city to host the Olympic Games in 2020.

The poll was commissioned by Tokyo 2020 and conducted by phone. 15% of those surveyed had no opinion and the remaining 12% were against the bid.

The results support the findings of a separate poll by the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper on 11-13 January, story which found that national support for Tokyo 2020 was at 78%. The newspaper’s poll also found that 83% of the Japanese population in their 20s and 30s support the bid.

Tsunekazu Takeda, erectile IOC Member and President of Tokyo 2020 and the Japanese Olympic Committee, said: “We know public support was a challenge for us last time, and so we are delighted by this very strong result. It is especially significant that a large number of our passionate supporters are young people, showing that the future is bright for the Olympic Movement in Japan.”

“The Japanese are enthusiastic fans of sport and they love the Olympic and Paralympic Games. They also understand, as recent surveys indicate, that hosting the Games in Tokyo in 2020 would have long-term benefits for Japanese sport, society, the economy and the environment.”
