Tokyo 2020 Bid Receives Overwhelming Local Support & Signs New Partner
March 26, 2013
A poll shows that 77% of the Tokyo public support Japan’s bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games.
The poll was commissioned by the Tokyo 2020 Olympic bid committee and the results are from a survey taken from 9 March to 20 March.
The International Olympic Comittee conducted their own poll in January and revealed that 70% of Tokyo’s residents were behind the bid during their visit to the Japanese capital city.
Tsunekazu Takeda, President of Tokyo 2020 said: “This very strong polling result reconfirms our citizens’ deep passion for sport, particularly the Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
“In a democracy like Japan, public support is earned through direct, continuous communication and interaction with everyday people, day by day and event by event.
“We now have earned the support of more than 10 million people in the city, and I am confident that it will continue to increase as momentum builds toward the 2020 Host City selection later this year.”
Tokyo 2020 has also announced Toyota Motor Corporation as an Official Partner of the bid.
Takeda added: “We are thrilled to receive the support of Toyota, one of the most globally recognised corporations.
“I very much look forward to working with Toyota, as well as other future partners who share our goal of welcoming the world to Tokyo for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
