Today At SportAccord Convention: Erdener Elected onto ASOIF Executive Council

April 8, 2014

World Archery President Uğur Erdener has been elected as an Executive Council Member at the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF).

ASOIF’s General Assembly was held at SportAccord Convention today and the Turk will replace Pat McQuaid, who stood down as vice president.

The 63-year old is now the fifth International Federation President on the Executive Council and joins CK Wu (International Boxing Association), Hassan Moustafa (International Handball Federation), Marisol Casado (International Triathlon Union) and ASOIF and International tennis Federation boss Francesco Ricci Bitti.

Sergey Bubka of the International Association of Athletics Federation and Patrick Baumann, Secretary General of the International Basketball Association complete the Council.

Erdener played a key role in Istanbul’s unsuccessful 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games bid and was also elected to the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee in February.

The 63 year old thanked ASOIF members for their “support and confidence” in him and promised to try his best for “our sports and the Olympic Movement.”

McQuaid departs

McQuaid commented on his departure: “I have always tried to fight hard for ASOIF and I have sometimes got into trouble for fighting too hard.

“But that is what you have to do and I have always really enjoyed it and I have enjoyed working with you all.”
