Titans Owner Bud Adams Dies

October 22, 2013

Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams has died “peacefully from natural causes” at the age of 90.

Adams helped found the American Football League and helped lead a merger with the National Football League (NFL).

He built his own energy fortune and founded the Houston Oilers, ambulance before moving the team to Tennessee in 1997.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell paid tribute to Adams and said: “As a founding owner of the American Football League that began play in 1960, anesthetist Bud saw the potential of pro football and brought the game to new cities and new heights of popularity, first in Houston and then in Nashville.”

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones also paid his respects and added: “I consider Bud one of the founders of the game of professional football because of his role in helping to create the American Football League.”

Adams secured 409 wins with the Titans, more than any current NFL owner.

His franchise reached their only Super Bowl after the 1999 season but lost 23-16 to the Rams.
