March 19, 2014

Race auctioner Tattersalls has expanded its sponsorship of York Racecourse to include sponsorship of the Group Three Acomb Stakes on the opening day of the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival.

The Tattersalls Acomb Stakes will offer £60,000 in prize money and regularly attracts top quality two year olds, most notably King’s Best who followed up his victory on the Knavesmire with classic success in the 2,000 Guineas of the millennium year.

Run on Wednesday August 20 this year, the race is the juvenile highlight of a race programme that includes York’s highest rated contest, the Group One Juddmonte International. Cumulative prize money for the opening day of the Ebor Festival exceeds £1m.

Tattersalls will also be continuing its long- standing support for another Group Three race at York, the Tattersalls Musidora, a contest for the leading fillies of the classic generation that has benefitted from their sponsorship at the Dante Festival each May since 1986.

Commenting on the sponsorship of the Acomb Stakes, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said, “The Acomb Stakes has a long and illustrious history and we are delighted to attach the Tattersalls name to such a prestigious contest on one of the premier racedays in the British racing calendar.

“The sponsorship of the Tattersalls Musidora at the Dante Festival is the longest standing in our global sponsorship portfolio and the Tattersalls Acomb Stakes has the perfect profile as focus turns towards our yearling sales in early October.”

Speaking about the extended support, the Chairman of York Racecourse, Lord Grimthorpe, said, “Tattersalls have been wonderful supporters of York for more than a quarter of a century so I am particularly delighted that they have chosen to support the Acomb Stakes.

“Having won the race with Dundonell in 2012, wearing my other hat as Racing Manager to Prince Khalid Abdullah, I know what it means to connections and think it is a perfect fit for them.”
