Swiss Cycling President Resigns in the Wake of McQuaid Re-Election Bid

August 22, 2013

The President of the Swiss cycling federation has resigned from his post as a result of his controversial decision to support International Cycling Union (UCI) President Pat McQuaid in his re-election campaign.

Richard Chassot stepped-down after disagreements in his attempts to secure McQuaid’s nomination from Switzerland, after his home nation, Ireland, withdrew their nomination.

McQuaid resides in Switzerland which was the factor in Chassot leading attempts for his nomination.

Chassot’s resignation was announced on the Twitter account of the Tour de Romandie race.

The tweet read: “Richard Chassot resgined with immediate effect from the presidency of Swiss Cycling, due to disagreements with its board…”

McQuaid’s presidential campaign now hangs in the balance and depends on a UCI constitutional change that would likely end in legal action.
