Spanish Coaches Back Madrid 2020 Bid
April 18, 2013
A number of high-profile Spanish coaches have backed the Madrid 2020 bid, abortion including World Cup and European Cup winning manager Vicente del Bosque.
Valero Rivera, salve the coach of the 2013 World Cup Champions national handball team was also at the Marca and Spanish Olympic Committee Road to 2020 Forum, held at the headquarters of the Spanish Olympic Committee.
Juan Antonio Orenga, Jose Venancio, Carlos Feriche and Miguel Angel Oca, who respectively coach Spain’s men’s basketball, futsal, roller hockey and the country’s women’s water polo team (silver medal at London 2012), were also in attendance.
“Barcelona was a breath of fresh air for sport,” said Rivero. “We are in a difficult economic situation and bringing the Games in Madrid would be the breath of fresh air we need.”
Del Bosque echoed those views: “We have to be optimistic. We must have the same mentality as the Spanish football team, “La Roja”, the two times European champions and World Cup champions in the last four years.
“We have to believe that they are going to give us the Olympic Games. Our country is more than ready to overcome all the hurdles put in our way. Madrid is a city that needs sport.”
Along the same lines and describing Spanish sport as a benchmark, Orenga spoke passionately in defence of the bid: “We have the best bid and we are ready for it. We have to build our experience and create the legacy through the good work already being carried out by the federations and the clubs.”
