SARU Lose Absa and BMW Sponsorships; In Talks With Replacements

The South African Rugby Union (SARU) has lost sponsors Absa and BMW within a matter of days after the two companies decided not to renew their contracts.

An SARU spokesman has confirmed that the organisation is currently in talks with two potential new sponsors.

Diederik Reitsma, a spokesperson for BMW, told Netwerk24 on Monday that they will not be renewing their five-year sponsorship with the Boks when it ends in December this year.

According to a report on Sunday in the Sunday Times, South African financial services company Absa also opted aganst renewing its contract.

Absa also previously decided to end its title sponsorship of South Africa’s domestic cup competition, the Currie Cup in 2016. 

BMW may be switching its attentions to other sports in South Africa, as it was recently confirmed as the title sponsor of golf’s SA Open in January.
