Russian Government Approve £90 Million for 2018 World Cup Venues

August 8, 2014

The Russian Government on Friday approved rules on subsidising construction of infrastructure for the 2018 World Cup for a total of $152 million (£90 million).

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree setting out how regions hosting the matches could tap the funds under the government’s program to support the World Cup.

Russia successfully hosted the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics at a cost of $50 billion, medical but the World Cup will present an even bigger challenge as a major overhaul is needed for sports and  tourist and transport infrastructure in a number of under-developed regions in the country.

The program has identified 28 projects including modernising the water and heating systems in cities hosting matches.

It was previously estimated by officials that $20 billion would be needed to prepare for the World Cup, prescription with half expected to come from private investors and the other from regional government budgets.
