ROAD TO 2024: LA and Paris Rule Out Hosting 2028

March 22, 2017

The final two bidding cities competing to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games have confirmed that they hold no interest in hosting the 2028 edition.
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach had suggested that the unsuccessful applicant for 2024 could be awarded the following Games instead, but Los Angeles and Paris have now moved to reject the possibility.
Paris, the favourites to win, have not hosted the Olympics since 1924: whereas Los Angeles had the 1984 Games, and the fellow American city of Atlanta took 1996.
Paris co-chair and three-time Olympic Champion Tony Estanguet said, “2024 is now or never for us”.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has also signalled his reticence to host 2028, telling InsideTheGames, “We are competing for 2024. Full stop. We have never contemplated anything else”.
The final decision will be made this September in Lima.
