ROAD TO 2024: IOC Plans Changes to Bidding Process
February 27, 2017
The International Olympic Committee has vowed to change the Olympic and Paralympic bidding process, after Budapest became the fourth prospective host to withdraw their interest in the event.
IOC spokesman Mark Adams has been quoted as saying, “These adjustments will be discussed with all the stakeholders of the Olympic Movement. In the meantime, the candidature procedure for the Olympic Games 2024 will continue with the two excellent candidatures of Los Angeles and Paris.”
Budapest 2024 confirmed that formal procedures have begun to officially withdraw from the selection process for the 2024 Games, after a campaign to force a referendum collected almost double the required signatures.
Budapest 2024 said a vote on the withdrawal of the Olympic bid will be held by the Budapest city assembly. The Hungarian Olympic Committee will officially notify the IOC of the results.
Budapest join Boston, Rome and Hamburg in exiting the process, with financial strains and public pressure proving decisive factors.
Should Budapest officially withdraw from the process, it would leave Los Angeles and Paris as the only remaining interested parties.
