ROAD TO 2024: IOC May Select 2024 and 2028 Hosts On Same Day

March 17, 2017

The unprecedented action of awarding two Olympic Games at one time may be taken in September.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) meet in Lima this September, with the selection of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games hosts to be decided during the session.

Los Angeles and Paris are the two remaining cities bidding for the 2024 event, after Budapest exited the race after a campaign to force a referendum waylaid the bid.

As there are only two cities left in the running, the IOC are considering commissioning a working group to bring forward the 2028 vote.

Paris is favourite for the 2024 Games ahead of Los Angeles, but the loser could get the 2028 Olympics.

“We have two excellent candidates from two major Olympic countries. This is a position you like to be in,” said IOC President Thomas Bach.

“It will be up to the working group how to best explore, how to best exploit, the positive situation. We should not miss the opportunity to explore this opportunity.”
