Qatar will invest $200bn (£135bn) in their construction system as preparation for hosting the 2022 World Cup.
A new Deloitte report titled ‘Insight into the Qatar construction market and opportunities for real estate developers,’ highlights that Qatar plan to invest over $140bn (£94.3bn) in transport infrastructure and $20bn (£13.5bn) in tourism.
Plans to construct new roads and a metro system have been accelerated ahead of the World Cup, as well as an expansion to the airport which is already underway.
The report demonstrated the Qatari government’s strategy of promoting sustainable tourism, including projects such as the Qatar-Bahrain causeway that aims to drive regional tourist arrivals in Qatar.
Jesdev Saggar, Managing Director, Infrastructure & Capital Projects at Deloitte Corporate Finance Limited said: “With the world focused on Qatar’s every move, it is imperative that the local industry prepares itself for the plethora of international organizations that are ready to descend on Doha.
“Preparing for the competition is as important to everyone on the built environment, as it will be when the games start.”
The 2022 World Cup will mark the first time the tournament has been held in an Arab nation and there has been much debate about the timing of the tournament.
Due to extreme heat there have been ongoing talks about hosting the event in the winter instead of the traditional summer time.
