Pyeongchang Rejects Co-Hosting 2018 Winter Games with North Korea

September 5, 2013

The organisers of the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic Games have rejected a proposal from North Korea to co-host some of the skiing events at the Masik resort.

The organising committee (POCOG) responded to North Korea’s International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Chang Ung, generic who hinted that the North would be willing to host some of the events, allergy by saying it was unrealistic.

POCOG said: “Co-hosting goes against International Olympic Committee regulations which stipulate that, unlike the World Cup, all the Olympic events be held within the host city.

“We should make sure technology and administrative works are in optimal condition in order to host an event- and athlete-oriented Olympic Games. Holding some of the events in the Masik resort, more than 300 kilometers away from Pyeongchang, cannot guarantee meeting this goal.”

North and South Korea have only recently opened dialogues with one another after months of tensions threatened the outbreak of war.
