Premier League Clubs Spend a Record £1.8bn on Wages

A record £1.8bn ($3.03bn) was spent by Premier League clubs in 2012-13 on player and staff wages according to a new report

The findings by the Guardian newspaper showed that the figure was 11% more than in the previous year and the increase was on the back of a record combined income of £2.7bn ($4.55bn).

Despite this, price sale the report highlighted that club’s made a combined loss of £291m ($490.86m) in the same period, with 12 of the 20 clubs reporting losses in that period.

Aston Villa, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and relegated Queens Park Rangers posted losses at £50m ($84.34m) or above.

Manchester City, who fell afoul of UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations this week, were named as the only Premier League club in the findings to have committed to paying its non playing staff the living wage of £7.65 ($12.90) an hour as recommended by Citizens UK.

The highest paid director in that time was Southampton’s then executive chairman Nicola Cortese who earned £2.129m ($3.59m), who was followed by Ivan Gazidis, Chuef Executive Officer of Arsenal who earned £1.825m ($3.078m).

Salary packages of over £1m ($1.68m) went to the highest paid director at nine clubs altogether: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Norwich City, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United.
