Prague and Polish Cities Drop Euro 2020 Bids

April 24, 2014

Prague and two cities in Poland have dropped their bids to host matches at Euro 2020 ahead of Friday’s deadline for candidate applications.

The Czech capital, along with Warsaw and Chorzow in Poland were aiming to host matches in the first continent-wide Euro competition.

Prague had aimed to stage three group-stage games as well as a quarter final but the Czech Football Federation (FACR) said a lack of support from city authorities made it impossible.

A statement read: “The Czech football federation (FACR) has decided not to put forward Prague as a candidate to organise Euro 2020.

“The mayor’s decision means a loss to Prague and to the Czech Republic, but mostly to all the supporters of Czech football.”

Authorities responded and called the FACR’s bid “incomplete.”

The Polish Football Federation described their prospects as “minimum” and therefore withdrew.
