Pakistan Court Orders Cricket Elections to be Held in Two Weeks

October 21, 2013

The top of Pakistani cricket has been trown into further disarray after a court ordered elections for the board chairman to be held in two weeks.

The Islamabad High Court’s ruling appears to have halted moves by a new Interim Management Committee (IMC) to delay the choice of a permanent chairman for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The PCB has been in turmoil since May, after the islamabad court removed former chairman Zaka Ashraf for the “dubious” process by which he earned the position.

The journalist Najam Sethi was named interim chairman in June by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, before a court ordered elections to be held on October 18 a month later.

The Prime Minister appointed the IMC to take over the day-to-day running of the IMC last week in a bid to steady the ship. The IMC wanted to delay elections to allow various local cricket associations to settle outstanding legal issues. However, High Court judge Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan to move ahead with elections today.

PCB legal advisor Taffazul Rizvi has said the elections are to be held by November 2.
