Oslo Residents Back 2022 Winter Games Bid

September 10, 2013

The residents of Oslo have voted in favour of bidding for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in a city-wide referendum.

If successful, 2022 would mark the third time Norway has hosted the event and on Monday 55% of voters supported the bid.

Frida Nilsen, 28-year-old store clerk told Reuters: “They say the budget will be 30 billion crowns ($4.98 billion) so you can expect it to blow out to twice that before we’re done.

“That seems to be a lot of money for a two-week party.”

Almaty in Kazakhstan remains the only city to formally apply to host the Games, with Barcelona and Munich strongly considering handing in an application.

Norway hosted the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo and the 1994 event in Lillehammer.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is expected to announce the winner in 2015 with applications due later this year.
