Muirfield To Allow Women Members

March 14, 2017

Muirfield golf club has made the decision to allow female members for the first time in its history.

Members convincingly voted 80.2% to 19.8% in favour of opening up the privately-owned club to female players, following a decision from golf’s governing body R&A to remove the venue as host of the Open Championship.

R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers said the club would now be reinstated as an Open venue.

The club was first opened in 1744, and has staged the Open sixteen times. Muirfield had required two-thirds of its membership to back the admittance of women in order to pass the new rules, with over four in five voting in favour of the change.
