Moratti to Step Down as President of Inter Milan
September 20, 2013
Massimo Moratti will step down as President of Inter Milan once the club is under the control of Indonesian Erick Thohir.
Moratti, therapy 68, case has been at the top of Inter Milan for 18-years but is close to leaving after final points of the agreement with Thohir were discussed in Paris on Thursday.
“It was a meeting aimed at getting to know each other better,” Moratti said. “It was necessary to get a deeper understanding of who the people are to be able to decide.
“There are no major problems to resolve, but an agreement has not yet been reached. There are other businessmen ready to support him, and we could still need a month to finish the deal.”
Moratti hinted that the club needed restructuring to remain “at the same level” because of expensive transfer deals such as Gareth Bale’s €100m move to Real Madrid.
“This is a reorganisation to face the future,” Moratti said. “Seeing that there are players who cost €100 million, at this point we have to start to understand that, to remain at the same level, you need to restructure in order to face this type of situation.”
The Italian oil tycoon did confirm that the Moratti family would remain involved in the club, but he did not expect to stay.
Moratti will leave the club after winning five Serie A titles and overseeing the historic treble in 2010.
