MLB Aiming to Play First Game in London in 2017

January 26, 2016

Major League Baseball (MLB) commissioner Rob Manfred has confirmed the league is working towards playing its first regular season game in London in 2017.

Speaking to the Associated Press (AP), Manfred said they are “working hard” to make it happen.

MLB will be looking to follow in the footsteps of the National Football League (NFL) and National Basketball Association (NBA) by playing a regular-season game in the English capital.

“We are very interested in playing there [London], and we’re working hard on that one,” Manfred told the AP during an interview.

“I don’t think it will be an opener because of the weather issues. It would be later in the season.”

MLB has featured games in Japan and Australia in the past, but this would be its first game in Europe and the UK, where the Olympic Stadium has been mentioned as a possible venue.

Manfred says they haven’t decided on any teams which will make the trip to London, but would like the sport to represent itself well in Europe.

“We haven’t really settled on teams, and I don’t want to speculate about that,” he said. “Obviously, we want to make as good a first impression in Europe as we possibly can.”
