Millennium Stadium to be Renamed as Part of 10-Year WRU and Principality Partnership
September 8, 2015
The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has entered into a 10-year partnership with Principality Building Society in a deal that will see the Millennium Stadium renamed the Principality Stadium in Januray 2016.
The WRU is expanding a partnership with the Welsh building society which dates back to 1969.
The renaming will begin a new chapter for the stadium which has been known as the Millennium Stadium since it opened on 26th June 1999.
Chairman of the Welsh Rugby Union, Gareth Davies, said: “I am delighted the home of Welsh rugby will now be called Principality Stadium under this historic new deal.
“And this moment should also not pass without a debt of gratitude being offered to the Millennium Commission, whose contribution to the building of our new national stadium at the end of the last century was recognised in its original naming.”
Group Chief Executive of the Principality Building Society, Graeme Yorston, said: “Becoming the official sponsor of the home of Welsh rugby is an important statement about our ambition.
“We share a strong history of shared values with the WRU and we are delighted to put our name to the home of Welsh rugby – a home that truly belongs to the nation and is at the heart of Welsh life.”
The first game after the renaming of the stadium will be Wales’ home Six Nations second round match with Scotland on 13th February.
The stadium has already been named as the host for the 2017 UEFA Champions League final.
