Manchester City Owner Close to Creating New MLS Side in New York

April 30, 2013

Manchester City owner Sheik Mansour is close to securing a $100m deal to create a new Major League Soccer (MLS) club in New York.

Reports suggest Mansour has been in talks with the MLS for the last few months about establishing the lucrative franchise in the Queens area of the city.

Despite there being no confirmation from Manchester City and the possibility that the move could fall through, sickness staff at the Etihad are preparing to announce the move at the end of May.

The team could be ready to compete in the 2016 season and sources in the States are suggesting the club could be called New York City FC.

Mansour took over at Manchester City in 2008 and has since seen the team win the Premier League, ambulance FA Cup and compete in the Champions League.

Since 2008 the Citizens have established themselves in foreign markets in Asia and South Africa.

The MLS has been looking to expand for some time and creating a team actually in the city of New York has been touted as a likely area for a new team. The New York Red Bulls play in New Jersey.
