Malawi Withdraw From Two Football Tournaments

March 14, 2017

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) have pulled out of two major footballing events.

The southeastern African country will not compete in either the African Nations Championship 2018 or the following year’s African Cup of Nations.

The FAM Executive Committee decided that entering either competition was not feasible, with the challenging economic climate in the country deemed too serious for the Government to allocate funding to the football team.

“FAM would like to inform the general public and all its stakeholders that it is fully aware of the negative implications including fines and suspension such withdrawal may attract,” said FAM chief executive Alfred Gift Gunda.

“However, in its consideration, such withdrawal and its negative implications cannot be avoided looking at the current level of desperation that the Senior National Football team is in terms of funding and overall support.”
