London Mayor Approves Chelsea Stadium
March 6, 2017
Chelsea Football Club have been given permission to build a new stadium. The new home to the Premier League leaders will seat 60,000 fans, a vast increase on the current 41,600-seater venue.
The £500m project was approved by London Mayor Sadiq Khan, whose office has the final approval on major planning applications in the UK capital.
Hammersmith and Fulham Council have already given permission to demolish the current Stamford Bridge stadium.
The new stadium has been designed by architects Herzog and de Meuron, who were also responsible for the “Birds Nest” Olympic stadium in Beijing.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has long held an ambition to improve the club’s matchday attendances. In 2012, the Russian billionaire attempted to redevelop Battersea Power Station, but was bested by property developers.
